That's where Equilibrium blatantly ripping off The Matrix comes in. You mean improves on it.

This is one of those movies I won't intentionally re-watch now. I saw it a dozen or so times as my roommate and I at the time kept showing this off to people. We loved it. Everyone we showed it to loved it. It came out at a time people were hungry for dystopian gun-fu long coat action. This movie delivered.
If I watched it now, I worry it would be ruined in my mind.

SnoBorderZeroIf I watched it now, I worry it would be ruined in my mind. Objectively, it wouldn't hold up. It's very much a relic of its time. But it is cheesy enough to still work. That's the one advantage it has over the Matrix. It doesn't actually take itself seriously. The movie knows exactly what it is and plays to it. In contrast, the Matrix sequels got too caught up in its own mythology and lost the audience along the way. If you love the original Matrix and want to indulge in it some more, without having to sit through the sequels, Equilibrium scratches that itch. It's like you just said. People wanted this movie at the time and it can still serve that same function.
