Guys, guys!
You're both wrong about Hook.
Let’s just agree that Young Sherlock Holmes is better than Harry Potter. Like Doomsday outlined in his post, it boils down to there being two kind of people in this world: those who love/like Hook and those who are hollow shells and just empty on the inside.

JURASSIC PARK (1993)
Between movies like Jaws and the Indiana Jones franchise, it’s safe to say that Steven Spielberg’s name is one that has become synonymous with the term “blockbuster.” And in 1993, Spielberg looked to further cement that status of his with Jurassic Park, which he’d initially grown fond of the concept while working closely with author Michael Crichton on the pilot of ER in 1989. In Spielberg’s own words, the film was “a really credible look at how dinosaurs might someday be brought back alongside modern mankind” and that “I was really just trying to make a good sequel to Jaws, on land.” Well, the summer of 1993 came around and it’s safe to say he succeeded at those.
Now, me myself, ever since I first saw the movie when I was in 6th grade, my opinion of the movie has been that it’s really, really good...but just short of great. Why? Well, I’ll get to that in a minute, but suffice it to say that this latest viewing of the film really made my previous qualms seen so meaningless within the grand scheme of top-notch adventure filmmaking that this movie really is. So, yes, I can now say that I love Jurassic Park instead of just “really like it a lot.” And the fact that I’d been held up enough over certain details about it for so many years now feels downright silly.
There are a number of things that this film does exceedingly well, but one of the best parts about this movie is that it understands the importance of building atmosphere and anticipation. Steven Spielberg deftly captures that sense of both wonder and terror necessary for a story like this, sometimes blending them together fluently, making this movie a truly exciting adventure. As an action-adventure, Jurassic Park works incredibly well. There’s enough excitement and thrills here so that we never get exhausted. Unlike the sequels, which seemed more concerned with gorging on blood and guts and terror while never really taking the time to relax and take in the aspects of this environment that truly are breathtaking, like this movie does (but we’ll get more into that once The Lost World comes up). John Williams’ score plays a large part in that, too, as the main theme is really a graceful and wondrous one, and some of his best work in his already impressive career -- right alongside the Hook score, PG Cooper. But on top of all that, Jurassic Park just proves how great Spielberg can make genre films that would have most likely ended up feeling like more of the same in the hands of any less capable director.
The special effects and tone are other things to praise about Jurassic Park. Nearly thirty years later, and this movie holds up effectively in those departments. One of the things about this movie that Spielberg does -- which ties into the whole tension-creating approach to the story — is that he never overexploits the dinosaurs, which is wise. He knows both when and how to use them so that their appearances have impact. This also serves to lend the bigger moments in the film that much more suspense, because there never comes a moment where you go, “Okay, enough of the T-Rex!” And speaking of, the big T-Rex attack sequence halfway through is still great. Not only does it echo Spielberg’s approach of using the biggest and most terrifying monster sparingly but effectively (just like in Jaws), but you really get the sense that he wants you to be as frightened as the characters in the scene are; note the complete lack of music during this sequence. It really makes this a MOMENT and makes the T-Rex a true presence to behold. Not only that, but it also happens to be the film’s most entertaining set piece. The decision to hold back on the number of dinosaur appearances also ensures that if there are any true imperfections with these special effects, they’re not really on-screen long enough for us to notice them too much.
Now looping back to what I was saying about my initial complaints I had about the film -- and they’re still there: the characters in this movie don’t necessarily have terribly compelling arcs, if any at all. Apart from Sam Neill’s Alan Grant learning to appreciate kids more or Richard Attenborough’s John Hammond learning the folly of his aspirations, the surviving characters really just end the film in largely the same places they were at the beginning emotionally. Now, granted, these characters are still given a wealth of likable personality. These are people you do legitimately enjoy spending time with and see interact with one another, particularly Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm, who just about steals the whole film. And it’s those very same personalities that are ultimately strong enough to compensate for the general lack of emotional arcs. I used to get hung up on said lack, but this time, I asked myself, “So what?” The craft on display in the rest of the film is strong, with so many iconic scenes and elements, that getting caught up over character arcs seems kind of like small potatoes. Sure, it’s a legitimate concern, but Jurassic Park is an adventure movie first and foremost and as such, it’s pretty first-rate genre entertainment and well-deserving of its iconic status; almost like a perfect cocktail of sensibilities from past Spielberg films like Jaws and Close Encounters.
And yeah, small issues with it be damned, I love it.

*cue the John Williams theme* AMC, or the Breaking Bad channel as kids call it these days, was airing a Jurassic Park marathon this week so I figured it was a good time to revisit the "trilogy" before the release of Jurassic World next year. JURASSIC PARK (1993)In the realm of special and visual effects, Jurassic Park is one of the groundbreaking films. Not only does it featuring cutting-edge CGI but also jawdropping animatronics by Stan Winston. But what about the story and characters? Does it measure up to the technology in the movie? The answer is... sort of. Based on the popular novel by Michael Crichton, the film has an interesting premise about a looney businessman who uses genetic engineering to bring dinosaurs back to life and feature them in a theme park. And all the scenes that reveal the theme park and the backstory behind it are fascinating to watch. However, once Jurassic Park turns into a horror movie, everything falls apart. The first mistake was with Wayne Knight's character. He plays a computer engineer who wants to steal dinosaur embryos and sell them to a corporate rival. In order to pull off his scheme, he shuts down the security system for the entire park. Does that make any sense? If he wants to access the embryo room, all he needs is a key card and to turn off the security cameras. The fact that this is how the plot is set in motion is laughable. They should have come up with something more creative. The second mistake was sidelining Jeff Goldblum halfway through the story. He plays Dr. Ian Malcolm, the only character who questions everything about the theme park and the people in charge of it. He's important because he keeps everything in perspective. With him gone, you kind-of root for the dinosaurs. And the third mistake was David Koepp's lazy screenplay. For example, there's a scene where Samuel L. Jackson's character, the only other computer engineer at the theme park, gets eaten by a dinosaur and suddenly the most useless character in the entire film - who's also an annoying child - is given computer skills so she can save the day. If that doesn't make you roll your eyes, then I don't know what will. Maybe the sequels. THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK (1997)4 years after almost being eaten by a T-Rex, Dr. Ian Malcolm returns to Jurassic Park - actually the Island next to Jurassic Park - so he can stop a group of people from kidnapping a dinosaur and taking it to the United States for an exhibition. Basically, Steven Spielberg made an unofficial remake of King Kong. But while King Kong is a classic film because "the monster" has a personality, The Lost World: Jurassic Park is another movie where Jeff Goldblum does nothing while people get eaten by dinosaurs. To say this is a disappointing sequel is an understatement. But there is ONE redeeming value. Spielberg allows a T-Rex to roam around San Diego (Burbank in reality) and cause all sorts of mayhem. It's the closest we've gotten to a successful American version of Godzilla. JURASSIC PARK III (2001)There's The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, so the fact that this movie is simply called Jurassic Park III tells you everything you need to know. I've never seen a lazier sequel in a billion dollar franchise. The whole movie is about a rescue mission. That's it. A boy with the worst parents ever gets stuck in the island and needs to get rescued. That's it. Come waste 93 minutes of your life. Jurassic Park: B+The Lost World: BJurassic Park III: C-

The best part of Jurassic Park for me was being 8 years old and sitting in the car watching my parents argue over whether I was old enough to go.

It's one of those movies where, if I ever get the chance to catch it on the big screen, I'd absolutely go. Yeah, I know they re-released it in 2013, but it was in fucking 3-D. No thank you.
