One of my favorite subreddits is r/loveforlandlords, just complete shitposting to bait reddit lefties that post Mao memes and whatnot.
Clear satire with people strategizing how to best excuse evictions, and a somewhat decent point that anyone posting the guillotine/Mao "kill all landlords" stuff should at the least be monitored.
Folks, twitter is also taking the bait. It's reply after reply of straight dumbasses.

Not sure why the whole "you shouldn't have a right to profit from someone's basic needs" argument is supposed to extend to landlords and not farmers or grocery stores or the like. In my experience landlords have basically no influence over your life so long as you pay your rent on time, and if you don't that's kind of on you.

I have been noticing a sharp increase in "landlords are evil" takes. There are some really awful landlords out there. If you're unhappy with your local grocery store, there's plenty of other options out there. As a result, they all try and keep their customers happy. A landlord is someone you can't just walk away from because they're being a POS. You're stuck with them for the term of the lease. The landlord may choose to double the rent at the end of the lease, demand a cut of your profits, or any number of other unsavory terms. Bad landlords don't seem to care that the result will be an empty piece of property for an unknown length of time, either. I've encountered numerous instances of insane landlords shooting themselves in the foot. If they're decided that a piece of property needs to cost a certain price, then that's it. That property will remain unoccupied until someone comes along who is willing to pay that price. Ever see a perpetually empty storefront in a high traffic part of your town? It's a safe bet that whoever's responsible for it is a crazy landlord. There's nothing wrong with making a reasonable profit on someone's basic needs. The problems arise when the landlord isn't interested in being reasonable. If there's an international health crisis that's resulted in a major economic crisis, throwing out previously reliable tenants is not a reasonable course of action. Replacing them with new tenants will take time, cost money, and there's no guarantee that the new tenants will be as reliable as the previous ones.

The landlord sued my job — even though we’re in a pandemic and no way anyone’s gonna take over the lot if we leave.

Another part of the criticism is that a landlord doesn't add anything to society. Farmers grow food/raise animals, grocery stores offer a convenient way to access food, landlords own property. They often didn't build it or do the work to maintain it but they still reap the profits. Much as profiting off of basic needs is always a bit dubious there is at least a service provided in other instances.

We need more landlords like the Mertzes and Mr. Furley. Let's not forget the king: Was he the landlord? I was always under the impression he was some dude who lived upstairs. But it's been a while and I haven't read the book.

I double-checked wikipedia to verify and he was the landlord.
