I hope Preston Sturges' ghost haunts all you motherfuckers. I like Sullivan's Travels a lot. You could probably sell me on it. It's one of Hollywood's most vivid depictions of the great depression and the fact that it does it in the context of a comedy makes it all the more interesting. The scene where the guy watches the cartoon with the migrant workers is a classic of the form. And it's also a very early and very canny critique of the dangers of an artist trying to depict something they don't know anything about while also being a sly refutation of itself given that Sturges' does manage to make a film not unlike the one the protagonist wanted to make by doing so in the context of an unpretentious satire. |
