Director: Robert Zemeckis Written by Eric Roth, based on the novel by Winston Groom Starring: Tom Hanks, Robin Wright Genre: Drama, Romance
#71 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).
Director: M. Night Shyamalan Written by M. Night Shyamalan Starring: Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osmont Genre: Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Too recent for the 2008 AFI list
Young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) is haunted by a dark secret: he is visited by ghosts. Cole is frightened by visitations from those with unresolved problems who appear from the shadows. He is too afraid to tell anyone about his anguish, except child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis). As Dr. Crowe tries to uncover the truth about Cole's supernatural abilities, the consequences for client and therapist are a jolt that awakens them both to something unexplainable.
My votes: Forrest Gump: Cut. I think Zemeckis deserves a spot on the list for BTTF or Roger Rabbit, but not this. Cutesy boomer nostalgia only gets you so far, and the movie takes away whatever bite the novel has. Sixth Sense: Cut. While fun, and i think underservedly crapped on, I just don't think this in the Top 100 American Films of all time. Add 12 more years since it's last placement on the list and there's even more films we could fit in.

For the love of god, cut and cut. If we can't get this bullshit off the list we should probably just give up now.

Forrest Gump: Cut
Forrest Gump is an easy film to pick on, and while some of its elements are certainly pandering and hokey I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I do like the film overall, granted I haven't actually watched it in over a decade. Hanks is wonderful in the title role and it's easy to get swept up in our omnipresent narrator hopping from one event of American history to another. But, this is a list of the top 100 greatest American films of all time, and there's absolutely no way this movie deserves to be there.
The Sixth Sense: Cut
Even if we attempt to not judge this movie retrospectively on M. Night Shyamalan's stunning plummet from this movie that only gets worse and worse (not to mention he's an arrogant douche) with each film, The Sixth Sense is one of those head-scratchers as to how it even made the AFI list in the first place. Yes, the twist is a jaw-dropping one that is always mentioned among the greatest of all time. Yes, Osment and Willis give solid performances and the movie is a fun viewing. But aside from the twist ending, The Sixth Sense is just a solid film that doesn't even stand close to measuring up with ultimate in American horror. The Sixth Sense over Halloween, Rosemary's Baby, Night of the Living Dead? It's insulting really.

Keep both, motherfuckers. Phanty is taking my spot this round. I like Forrest Gump. I wouldn't list it under my favorite movies, most remembered movies, or even movies from 1994 that I still give a rats ass about, but I like it. The Sixth Sense is bleh.

There's certainly been a Forrest Gump hating bandwagon lately that I've never understood. That said... top 100 is a bit much. So I think we can get rid of it.
And Sixth Sense again is a film that's gotten a lot of backlash, undeserved in my opinion. I think 6th sense is fantastic. But I do NOT understand how its on the list and The Exorcist is not. So I'm okay losing this one too.

I think 6th sense is fantastic. But I do NOT understand how its on the list and The Exorcist is not. Because one is a thriller and the other is a horror film. It’s why Silence of the Lambs can win Best Pictures at the Oscars but Prom Night II: Hello Mary Lou won’t even get a shoutout for its food catering.

I'm thisclose to going all Heath Ledger Joker up in this bitch.
Sixth Sense, fine, take it. I still love it, though. Forrest Gump, however...I could get as personal and open as I've ever been on here in discussing why it means so much to me if I wanted to. It seriously depresses me a little that it has such the backlash that it does today. It's Top 100 material for goddamn sure if you ask me.

Again, I haven't seen either of them in a long, long time and my opinion might slightly sour but I feel they're both shitted on unfairly. Top 100 films? Absolutely fucking not. But good entertainment and good films overall? In my book, yeah. And wow, I just realized that The Exorcist is not on the list. AFI really shit the bed when it comes to horror. Alien? The Shining? To choose The Silence of the Lambs is fine, but The Sixth Sense over all the other obvious choices? What the fuck!

As I've went through the movies, I've been trying to add stats on decade, genre, star, writers, and actors. About 30 films in, but I'll provide that at some point. Horror and comedy are both underrepresented from what I can see so far. A nomination round is coming shortly though.

This set brought to you by randomizationDirected by D.W. Griffith Written by D.W. Griffith Starring: Lillian Gish, Robert Haron Genre: Drama, History
Does not appear on 1998's AFI Top 100
D.W. Griffith's epic intercuts between four separate stories about man's inhumanity to man. In Babylon, pacifist Prince Belshazzar is brought down by warring religious factions. In Judea, the last days of Christ (Howard Gaye) are depicted in the style of a Passion play. In France, Catherine de Medici presides over the slaughter of the Huguenots. And in California, a woman (Mae Marsh) pleads for the life of her husband (Robert Harron) when he is sentenced to hang for a murder he did not commit.
Director: Ridley Scott Written by Hampton Fancher, David Peoples, based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick Starring: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young Genre: Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Does not appear on the 2008 AFI list
Deckard (Harrison Ford) is forced by the police Boss (M. Emmet Walsh) to continue his old job as Replicant Hunter. His assignment: eliminate four escaped Replicants from the colonies who have returned to Earth. Before starting the job, Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation and he meets Rachel (Sean Young), a Replicant girl he falls in love with.
My votes: Intolerance: I'm going to hold off voting for now. see notes below. Blade Runner: Keep. The world-building is so precise, and the visuals are so influential I don't see how you can't keep this.
----------------------------------------------------
Administrative notes:
1) Do people need a few days to watch Intolerance? It's free on Amazon Prime though it's a 2 hr version instead of the full 3hr 17 min version. There is a 2hr 57 minute version with no soundtrack on the Internet Archive, and 2hr 46minute version with sound on Youtube as well, and even a version on Tubi split into two parts. I don't think any of the sound versions are the original soundtrack given they all are different scores.
2) I was planning on a nomination round after this one, but can hold for another 5 sets if people would like that option more. The plan was if we had 2 or more vacancies, each user nominates 1 or 2 movies for consideration, and we vote in the top two.

For nomination will it just be a buncha random movies or will it be focused on a genre?
Only have seen br but boot it and replace it with the final cut.

Only things I was going to fluctuate were movies one can nominate, and the number we'd let in at once. I thought I'd save some vacancies for more nominations at the end as the list takes shape. I'm open to the frequency of the nomination rounds, but wanted to sprinkle them throughout.

See here is a different scenario: two films that ultimately don't mean much to me, but whose importance I recognize.
That said, with Intolerance... I think adding it was reactionary to not wanting Birth of a Nation on. So I'm kind torn. Blade Runner can stay though.
