Does that mean Letters from Iwo Jima and Apocalypto are ineligible? Movies produced by english-speaking countries.

Does that mean Letters from Iwo Jima and Apocalypto are ineligible? See, this is where it gets tricky. Looking up the criteria used by the AFI, this is what they said regarding a movie's nationality:
American film: English language, with significant creative and/or financial production elements from the United States. (Certain films, notably The Bridge on the River Kwai, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia, were British-made but funded and distributed by American studios. The Lord of the Rings was New Zealand-made with American funding.)
So, I suppose they could be, but a decision would have to be made about foreign language films one way or the other. Seven Samurai is on the official AFI Top 100, but was that because of lack of options or the voters inherently focused on American, i.e. English-language films?

Seven Samurai is on the official AFI Top 100 For real? Woops. Got mixed up.
You know what, let's keep it simple. English-speaking movies only.

I like the idea of a 21st century themed AFI. Should we put it to a vote somewhere? CS! AFI Top 100 of the Past 25 years or CS! AFI Top 100 of the 21st Century.

I wonder if we can get this thread to 100 pgs by the end of the new 100 ranking.

Alright, guys, this is where I'm at right now with my Best of the 21st Century idea. Let me know how it looks/if I'm missing any potential details:
Rules: Has to be a theatrically-released movie. Direct-to-VOD/NETFLIX/HULU/AMAZON PRIME, ETC. DOES NOT COUNT UNLESS IT RECEIVED SOME SORT OF THEATRICAL RUN AS WELL. Has to be released from January 1st, 2001 to December 31st, 2019. Can be produced by Britian, Australia/New Zealand, etc. but has to have English as its primary language. Modus Operandi: Participants choose two movies at a time to be voted on for entry onto the list. Movies must meet the criteria. Much like this thread, there will be nomination and voting-specific rounds. Participants then vote on the collected films to be added onto the list. Ideally, this will create 50 nomination/voting rounds, unless there’s a two-way tie for first place in each respective round. Nominations/voting will continue until we have 100 films fitting the criteria. Horse trading is allowed, but keep in mind there’s 100 empty slots from the get-go, so there’s lots of real estate to fill. Horse trading will most likely be more of a factor the more the slots fill up. Once we have our 100, ordering/positioning on the list comes next. thebtskink, I may need to consult with you on how to do this.
Then, hopefully, we'll have our list.
Also, Skink, out of respect to you, I can wait until this current list has been completed.

Including this one we have 20 pairs to go through, which would be about 3-4 weeks before we start ranking.
Unless others see an issue, I dont think you need to wait that long man. We have four tourneys or lists going on already. What's a fifth?

Alrighty. If nobody else objects to this going on at the same time as the Reconsideration list, then I can start really putting it together.

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial: Keep Sullivan's Travels: Cut, though I think it's a fantastic movie and Sturges' best film.

That was a fun tally. ET is in 6-3, Sullivan's Travels is in 5-4. Next pairing up in a few.

This pairing brought to you by 50's Westerns:
Director: Fred Zinnermann Written by Carl Foreman Starring: Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly Genre: Western
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls
#33 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Former marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) is preparing to leave the small town of Hadleyville, New Mexico, with his new bride, Amy (Grace Kelly), when he learns that local criminal Frank Miller has been set free and is coming to seek revenge on the marshal who turned him in. When he starts recruiting deputies to fight Miller, Kane is discouraged to find that the people of Hadleyville turn cowardly when the time comes for a showdown, and he must face Miller and his cronies alone.
Trivia: Although the film takes place between 10:35 a.m. and 12:15 p.m, you would need to start watching the film at 10:50 a.m. in order for noon in real life to synchronize with the "High Noon" of the film.
Director: George Stevens Written by A.B. Guthrie, Jr. , Jack Sher Starring: Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur Genre: Western
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls
#69 on 1998's AFI Top 100
Enigmatic gunslinger Shane (Alan Ladd) rides into a small Wyoming town with hopes of quietly settling down as a farmhand. Taking a job on homesteader Joe Starrett's (Van Heflin) farm, Shane is drawn into a battle between the townsfolk and ruthless cattle baron Rufus Ryker (Emile Meyer). Shane's growing attraction to Starrett's wife, Marian (Jean Arthur), and his fondness for their son Joey (Brandon de Wilde), who idolizes Shane, force Shane to realize that he must thwart Ryker's plan.
Trivia: The first gunshots in the film are when Shane shows Joey how to fire a revolver. To enhance the dramatic effect of the shooting, the sounds of the gunshots were elevated by firing a gun into a garbage pail. The echoed reverberations made the gunfire sounds much louder. George Stevens' intention was to startle the audience with the first firing of a gun.
My Votes: High Noon: Keep. One of my favorite older movies, a decent allegory for the HUAC, and I like the performances. Shane: Cut. I don't find it all that special, and that kid is high in the pantheon of annoying child actors.
