Apocalypse Now: Keep
The Deer Hunter: Cut
There's a lot to admire about The Deer Hunter and there's really nothing about I don't particularly like, but I don't think it would crack the top 100 list for American films. There are better war movies (Paths of Glory comes to mind) that aren't on the list that I think would be stronger choices. Good movie, but this is the top 100 list.

This pairing brought to you by families travelling America during the Great Depression looking for money:
Director: John Ford Written by Nunnally Johnson Based on the novel by John Steinbeck Starring: Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell, John Carradine Genre: Drama, History
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #21 on 1998's AFI Top 100
The Joad clan, introduced to the world in John Steinbeck's iconic novel, is looking for a better life in California. After their drought-ridden farm is seized by the bank, the family -- led by just-paroled son Tom (Henry Fonda) -- loads up a truck and heads West. On the road, beset by hardships, the Joads meet dozens of other families making the same trek and holding onto the same dream. Once in California, however, the Joads soon realize that the promised land isn't quite what they hoped.
Trivia: The film was one of the first to be voted onto the National Film Registry (1989).
Director: Arthur Penn Written by David Newman , Robert Benton Starring: Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway Genre: Crime
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #27 on 1998's AFI Top 100
In the middle of the Great Depression, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker meet when Clyde tries to steal Bonnie's mother's car. Bonnie, who is bored by her job as a waitress, is intrigued with Clyde, and decides to take up with him and become his partner in crime.
Trivia: Warner Brothers had so little faith in the film that, in an unprecedented move, they offered first-time Producer Warren Beatty forty percent of the gross, instead of a minimal fee. The movie went on to gross over fifty million dollars.
My Votes: Grapes of Wrath: I don't really know. Convince me. Bonnie and Clyde: Keep. It's kind of the start of new Hollywood. The opening and the ending are the only really special parts though.

Keep both. Bonnie and Clyde speaks for itself. Grapes of Wrath is also Ford's best pure drama and a powerful example of Old Hollywood filmmaking designed to challenge rather than comfort.

Grapes should be kept because grapes are delicious.
Bonnie and Clyde doesn't taste that good. Cut it.

If anything Coop's gif is a compelling argument as to why Grapes should be kept. When was the last time Bonnie and Clyde were that funny?
