This pairing brought to you by The Marx Brothers:
Director: Leo McCarey Written by Bert Kalmar Starring: Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx, Zeppo Marx, Margaret Dumont Genre: Comedy
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls #85 on 1998's AFI Top 100
When the tiny nation of Freedonia goes bankrupt, its wealthy benefactor, Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont), insists that the wacky Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) become the country's president. Sensing a weakness in leadership, the bordering nation of Sylvania sends in the spies Pinky (Harpo Marx) and Chicolini (Chico Marx) to set the stage for a revolution. As Firefly clashes with the Sylvanian ambassador (Louis Calhern), plenty of mayhem ensues, and the countries verge on all-out war.
Trivia: By the time the film was in production, Harpo Marx was the critical darling of the intellectual community, particularly around the famed "Algonquin Round Table" in New York City, made up of several of the notable literati of the day, like Dorothy Parker and Robert Benchley. Alexander Woollcott considered Harpo to be the greatest pantomime since Charles Chaplin. Always considered to be the most congenial Marx brother, Harpo nevertheless let the attention go to his head, just a bit. One day on the set, Harpo, in an unusually pretentious gesture, asked Herman J. Mankiewicz to explain the motivation of his character. (As if Harpo was playing anyone else but Harpo...) Mankiewicz replied, "You're a middle-aged Jew who goes around picking up sh**."
Director: Sam Wood Written by George S. Kaufman , Morrie Ryskind Starring: Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, Chico Marx, Zeppo Marx, Margaret Dumont Genre: Comedy, Music
Does not appear on 2012's Sight and Sound Polls Does not appear on 1998's AFI Top 100
The Marx Brothers run amuck in the world of opera when Otis B. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) meets aspiring singer Ricardo (Allan Jones), who is determined to win the love of fellow performer Rosa (Kitty Carlisle). Aided by Fiorello (Chico Marx) and Tomasso (Harpo Marx), Otis attempts to unite the young couple, but faces opposition from the preening star Lassparri (Walter Woolf King), who also has his sights on Rosa. Traveling from Italy to New York, Otis and friends rally to try and win the day.
Trivia: In exasperation after several attempts to have Groucho Marx read one of his lines in the manner director Sam Wood had requested, Wood exclaimed, "I guess you just can't make an actor out of clay." Groucho Marx instantly responded, "Nor a director out of Wood."
My votes:
Duck Soup: Keep. Comedy classic. I can't imagine the list without it. A Night at the Opera: Cut. I love the Marx Brothers, but I'm not sure we need both.

Like SnoBorderZero said, Bonnie & Clyde already represents those Baby Boomer movies. We don’t need all three. Look for some Gen-X/Millennial/Zoomer movies to put in their place. Zoomers have terrible taste, no one is voting for a zoomer movie.

Zoomers have terrible taste, no one is voting for a zoomer movie. I think Christopher Nolan is a Zoomer-era filmmaker. The Dark Knight and Heath Ledger impacted the Zoomers more than it did the Millennials. We still have Tim Burton/Michael Keaton Batman as our calling card. PG Cooper will die on that Nolan/Bale/Ledger hill.

These are both excellent, phenomenal comedies that rival Modern Times and City Lights as the best of the 1930s.
However, I don't think both of them are necessary to be included. So I'm going to go with the superior film here.
Duck Soup: Keep
A Night at the Opera: Cut

Yeah we only need one, and I think Duck Soup is the better of the two.

I'm going the opposite, not as anything contrarian, but I genuinely enjoy A Night at the Opera more.

A Night at the Opera is really good, but it also shows start of the lamer elements that would begin to weigh down the Marx Brothers movies, namely the introduction of young lovers who aren't funny and only tangentially related to the boys.

So PG Cooper, since Canada is getting Tenet before the U.S., got any Christopher Nolan video essays lined up?

Better question, are we all crashing on Coop's floor when it comes out? Or splitting an Air B&B?
Also when are we all sitting in on one of Coop's classes?
