Cut them both
This is an easy choice for me. Ugly movies about ugly people doing ugly things. I recently finished the book Easy Rider, Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind, which is about 70's film making. It's a miracle that Easy Rider turned out as well as it did. Dennis Hopper deserves zero credit for any success the film enjoyed. It succeeded despite him, not because of him.

These are both important movies and in my book very good ones as well. They're important for being among the first wave of R-rated films in the wake of the Hays Code finally being abolished and being far more representative of American audiences than what Hollywood was pumping out.
But... that's not really enough, is it? I mean, if I'm going based on that alone then Bonnie and Clyde is the film that truly merits that distinction and it came out two years earlier than both of these movies (and is also a superior film to both of these). I'm a fan of both films and I think both are important films in kicking off the end of classic Hollywood, but they're not top 100 films.

Any time there were potentially multiple sides of a story, the author sought out the different perspectives and presented them. Dennis Hopper denied pretty much every claim anyone made about him, other than the substance abuse problem. While some of the tales were "he said/she said", loads of others involved multiple people who witnessed his crazy behavior. Even Spielberg complained about how he was portrayed in the book, despite being presented as a generally good guy. The author cut almost everyone a lot of breaks, laying the blame for most bad behavior at the feet of drug abuse, which almost everyone in Hollywood was doing at the time. |

I'm convinced. We should keep Easy Rider for being symbolic of being a happy accident, and a testament to great actors with substance abuse problems that we put up with because it makes them even better.

Like SnoBorderZero said, Bonnie & Clyde already represents those Baby Boomer movies. We don’t need all three. Look for some Gen-X/Millennial/Zoomer movies to put in their place. |
