I've moved off Safety Last to Halloween out of disrespect to The Dark Knight. If you switch back to Safety Last and I'll support Fargo next time around Done

Maybe next time, Truman. Maybe next time.
What happens in the event that the movies with the most votes are two ties each?

Wouldn't this round just go to Social Network and Night of the Hunter if we called it now?

Yes, I think it's the top 2 that will make it, but there are 3 vacancies, correct?

Three made it through last time, was that just because there was a tie for second?

Three made it through last time, was that just because there was a tie for second? That was my understanding. The poll here says two go through.

Seems like most people have voted already, so rather than wait for the poll to end, time to add another set. I'll announce the poll results tomorrow, feel free to keep making your cases there. This pairing brought to you by Charlie Chaplin:
Director: Charlie Chaplin Written by Charlie Chaplin Starring: Charlie Chaplin, Virginia Cherrill Genre: Silent Comedy
#76 on 1998's AFI Top 100
A hapless but resilient tramp (Charlie Chaplin) falls in love with a blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill) on the tough city streets. Upon learning that she and her grandmother are to be evicted from their home, the tramp undertakes a series of attempts to provide them with the money they need, all of which end in humiliating failure. But after a drunken millionaire (Harry Myers) lavishly rewards him for saving his life, the tramp can change the flower girl's life forever.
Trivia: Orson Welles said that this was his favorite movie of all time.
Director: Charlie Chaplin Written by Charlie Chaplin Genre: Silent Comedy
#74 the 1998 AFI list
In this classic silent comedy, the Little Tramp (Charles Chaplin) heads north to join in the Klondike gold rush. Trapped in a small cabin by a blizzard, the Tramp is forced to share close quarters with a successful prospector (Mack Swain) and a fugitive (Tom Murray). Eventually able to leave the cabin, he falls for a lovely barmaid (Georgia Hale), trying valiantly to win her affections. When the prospector needs help locating his claim, it appears the Tramp's fortunes may change.
Trivia: Mack Swain decided to quit, complaining that he couldn't bear such a vigorous role wearing a thick fur winter suit. Chaplin let him leave, but decided to coax him back. Unfortunately, Swain had already shaved and rather than have him wear a fake beard, Chaplin decided to pause production until Swain regrew his beard.
My votes:
City Lights: Keep. It's not the best Chaplin film on the list, but the second and unquestionably great. The story really holds together
The Gold Rush: Cut. The Gold Rush is one of the rare Chaplin films where the supporting cast isn't given much room to shine, and the movie suffers from it, feeling more like a few vignettes than a story. I'd be more willing to forgive if it had something holding it together thematically or as a statement like Modern Times, which definitely belongs.

My initial response was to keep both but while I like The Gold Rush, I don't love The Gold Rush. I think we're fine with City Lights and Modern Times (although I prefer The Kid and The Circus to all three).
City Lights: Keep The Gold Rush: Cut

Don't you dare turn me against Chaplin, DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE!
But if I only keep one, it'd be City Lights. Gold Rush has great sequences, but just about everyone in that movie except for the Tramp is an asshole. I don't really enjoy it like the other Chaplin silents like The Kid and The Circus.

My official voter for now is keep both.
Having said that, I will make an argument that I'd rather keep The Gold Rush than City Lights. It's more packed with funny set-pieces and in many ways the humor has a darker streak which I appreciate. Prefer Modern times over both of them though.

Keep both and Modern Times. Chaplin was the man. No need to worry about him being over-represented.

City Lights: Keep
The Gold Rush: Cut
Though Modern Times outranks both, in my opinion.

Damnnnnn, 3 way tie at the top now. Yes a final vote mysteriously materialized for The Dark Knight in the last minutes. Couldn't possibly have been the work of the people who create fake accounts could it?
