In the midst of the Blackface scandal, Disney has the balls to release Hamilton, the Broadway musical in which White people are played by Puerto Ricans and African-Americans. Racist!
The play also continues the Musical Theater tradition of clowning on Thomas Jefferson (see: 1776). Fake News!
Remember the Saved By The Bell episode in which they do a rap version of Snow White? That's Hamilton. But less cheesy? I'm actually glad they just filmed the stage show instead of doing an actual movie. Can you imagine watching Hamilton & Jefferson do an 8 Mile style Rap Battle in a movie? Pure cringe.
So what are your thoughts on Hamilton? The Man. The Musical. The $10 Bill.

In the midst of the Blackface scandal, Disney has the balls to release Hamilton, the Broadway musical in which White people are played by Puerto Ricans and African-Americans. Racist! Sorry, but obviously one party is morally superior to the other, and when they do something, it's a virtuous signal whereas white people doing it is obviously meant to marginalize others. Sarcasm aside, it struck me as hypocritical, but I feel that way about the left these days altogether. And, no, I'm not a right-winger either. That party has it's own issues as well, but here is a chance to point out when the left is being stupid as fuck. All that aside, it was a well-done production. Great performances, incredible songs. I can see why it swept all the categories, but it was distracting to watch two and a half hours of hypocrisy, a hot button for me personally.

Thought it was excellent. Not a big musical fan, but this avoided all the pitfalls while delivering incredible songs and performances in its entirety.
It exceeded the hype for me.

This was my 2nd time seeing Hamilton performed, but the first seeing it with the original cast. I really liked it the first time, and I really liked it again here. It's a solid and engaging musical with tons of energy and catchy songs (The Room Where It Happens refuses to leave my head). And I think they made the right call simply filming the play. The combination of the setting with this decidedly very modern style of music wouldn't have worked for an actual film. But it certainly does in this intended approach.

Based on a back-and-forth I've been having with IanTheCool on Letterboxd: are we considering this an actual movie? I'm saying yes, but barely.

I hate TikTok so much. It's the one thing I hope Trump actually succeeds in getting rid of.

Based on a back-and-forth I've been having with IanTheCool on Letterboxd: are we considering this an actual movie? I'm saying yes, but barely. It's as much a movie as U2's Rattle & Hum is, or as any stand-up comedy film for that matter. It's a live stage show taped for theatrical release, which if you were to see it in the theater, you would look up the "movie" time.

PG Cooper let me include Hamilton in his Top Five thread. So by PG Cooper's criteria, it's a movie.

PG Cooper let me include Hamilton in his Top Five thread. So by PG Cooper's criteria, it's a movie. Hamilton is most definitely not a movie. By that logic the plays I acted in back in high school were movies since the teacher filmed them.
