The original was one of the perfect 90's cocktails. Why bother?

A Twister can't top a Sharknado. The thrill is gone because we've seen better.

The original was one of the perfect 90's cocktails. Why bother? This is true, and also I feel like the '90s could get away with these sort of effects driven blockbusters where audiences would pour in to marvel at how much destruction and CGI chaos studios could throw at them since it was still fairly new. Twister was the best of the bunch for sure, but in the end it's one of the disaster movies that were prevalent in the '90s and somewhat in the early 2000s. Now I just don't think people care anymore. We've seen it all done at this point. Cities, countries, planets, whatever we've all seen them destroyed in the most spectacular CGI available and to say the fun of watching these moments have lost their luster is putting it mildly.

The original also had the benefit of a cast that included Bill Paxton, Helen Hunt and Phillip Seymour Hoffman who brought loads of charm to their characters which permeated the whole movie and made it that much more fun. If this goes through, I guarantee you no matter who they get to write it and star in it, they're not gonna bring nearly as much heart to it.

Agreed, it'll go for pure spectacle and the actual plot and characters will be complete afterthoughts.

I was going to say ideally this movie would be Twister: Resurgence and end with Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character pumped to go to the Twister homeworld saying "Let's kick some tornado assssssssssssss."
Then I reflected on how many people from that movie that are no longer with us: Hoffman, Paxton, even Michael Crichton, who wrote the screenplay. Now I'm just depressed.

There were already multiple tornadoes in the movie Twister. Pluralizing the title doesn't actually represent an increase in the stakes.

Rewatching the original right now. The last good disaster/Blockbuster movie.
Is it 90s to the max? Yeah. But it's tactile and propulsive despite a few shoddy cgi moments.
