I never thought this looked particularly good when I started seeing the trailer in theaters (oh, how I miss those), but I guess I've just been starved for new 2020 movies, so I gave it a go. Yeah, this is about what I expected. It actually starts off kind of amusing with an extended argument between Nanjiani's and Rae's characters, but from there, it quickly devolves into every bit the uninspired, thinly-written and rarely-funny comedy it looked like. And it's even more of a shame, considering this is Michael Showalter's and Kumail Nanjiani's follow-up to The Big Sick, not only the best romantic comedy in years but also one of the best movies of its respective year. The two of them and Issa Rae do the best they can do here and the two leads ARE the best thing about it, but this is a movie rather perfectly suited for Netflix than a theatrical release. There's a reason Paramount wanted to sell it off even before the pandemic.

How similar is this movie to Date Night starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey?

Counter point it's about exactly what you expect. Kumail remains a terrible actor but this isn't his worst work. It has a couple good chuckles.

I remember the line in the trailer "This is me covering up my body cam so I can beat your ass." That was pretty funny.
The rest, not so much.

How similar is this movie to Date Night starring Steve Carell and Tina Fey? Very similar, now that I think about it.
Except this one has a weird sex cult plot point for no reason.
