I try to buy components that don't have a reason to add restrictions, or push something or another, which is why I don't tend to bother with any Apple products. I don't think Amazon has done anything shady, but still, it's the main reason I've not bothered with the Firestick and stuck with Roku. Roku, presumably, just wants as many apps on its hardware as possible.

Whichever one supports Shudder. If both, then win-win.

Whichever one supports Shudder. If both, then win-win. Shudder is the one niche streaming service that's got it's act together app-wise. Not together enough to have a PS4 app, but at least together enough to have an Xbox app. Take note Criterion Channel and Mubi.

Not only does Criterion Channel make itself available on a couple platforms, it won’t let me connect to a projector or second monitor if I’m watching on my computer. Psh!
Also, it says it’s available on Amazon Fire but I don’t see it there. Is there some trick to download the app or just false advertising?

Buy an Nvidia shield. They always go on sale and are the best 4k streamer hands down.
But if I had to pick I'd take Roku - built on Google code not its own ecosystem like Amazon's.

I got mine a year ago, but I'm lucky that whatever version that is, it supports Criterion, but I do know older models for whatever reason cannot download Criterion.

Roku is dead simple and has a remote but content options maybe limited especially for foreign stuff. If has the foreign content they watch it is a good option. Firestick is Android based so it gives you plenty of app options even if you have to sideload, again if it has the content they watch it is also a very good option. More information on how Firestick works here
