Just in case everyone is getting confused, Two Towers is the one with Helm's Deep, probably the best sequence of the entire series. Go ahead and change your votes to Two Towers if you haven't already. The best set piece of the series is Aragorn vs Lurtz, followed by the melancholy of Boromir's passing. Nothing matches the back-to-back entertainment and emotion of those two moments.

Let's be honest though. LOTR is just one film chopped into 3, so comparisons are largely pointless.

It's far from an original concept, the sequels were crap, the acting was widely mocked at time of release, and its primary legacy is giving a bunch of incel neckbeards a tortured metaphor to understand why the world is against them. I like it as a fun popcorn flick, but it's far from seminal. It felt pretty &%*$ing original in 99.

Nick Mason of the Weekly Planet podcast often points out that the Matrix borrowed heavily from a somewhat under the radar comic (I'm brainfarting on the name), including stealing the "Mankind is a virus" speech in its entirety from it.
Compounding that with similarities with Terminator (which in turn was sued for plagiarism itself) and people constantly crying that it stole Dark City's thunder (I mean...I guess...), The Matrix was never really that original. It was probably more original in its style than anything.

Depending on the level of obscurity that you want to go to, you can say that nothing is original. People who want to decry the Matrix for whatever reason will point out things like Dark City or World on a Wire or under the radar comics, whatever. But I'm pretty sure those are things they found in hindsight.
Its like someone saying that Inception was unoriginal because the idea was mentioned in some Mickey Mouse comic book? Give me a break.

If it's stealing dialogue from the book, then it deflates your argument.

DuckTales comic book. The Beagle Boys go inside Scrooge McDuck’s dreams to extract the combination to his safe. There’s also 1984’s Dreamscape with Dennis Quaid and Kate Capshaw that has a similar plot. We actually discussed that movie at the old CS! when Inception came out. It was widely available on Netflix streaming.

It was probably more original in its style than anything. Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles from 1994, about an alien race enslaving humans without their knowledge. That's the one. I can never remember that title because all I can think of is that Arthur and the Invisibles movie. It came out just before the Wachowskis went into production on Matrix, and when it came out comic readers were like "wut." I haven't read it myself, but most seem to believe Morrison would have had a solid case for plagiarism, from what I'm told. Especially if the stolen dialogue is as exact as Mason claims, because that would have been a checkmate. It's like that lawsuit against that Michael Bay movie The Island, from a little seen movie called The Clonus Horror, which is mostly remembered because it was turned into an MST episode. There could be an argument that the concept could have potentially been developed by two separate people and Clonus was to niche to make an impact, because there was even a Sliders episode with the same story, but if you watch the movies back to back, there are too many plot similarities to not take note of. A group of clones being grown and kept healthy on an organ harvest farm for the wealthy, where if need be they graduate and get to go to "America"/"The Island" where they are finally harvested, until clones escape and discover the truth. They're pretty much the exact same movie, except one has a bigger budget and a lot of action. Clonus won that case for a reason.

It felt pretty &%*$ing original in 99. The visual effects were cutting edge but everyone immediately pointed out it was just a flashier Dark City.

As long as I've been online, there's always been at least one person that won't shut up about it. That's been since 2000-ish.
Since they were both likely in production at the same time, it was likely just a coincidence. I never cared for Dark City anyway.

Battle of the Franchise Films
The Sweet 16
Regional Semi-FinalsRegion 4, Battle 8Star Wars Released: 1977 From: The Star Wars Saga Directed By: George Lucas Trailer Time:Franchise Facts:James Earl Jones and David Prowse, who play the voice and body of Darth Vader, respectively, have never met. VersusStar Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Released: 1980 From: The Star Wars Saga Directed By: Irvin Kershner
Trailer Time:Franchise Facts:When shooting on-location in Finse, Norway, a fierce snowstorm hit the hotel where the cast and crew were staying. This would have normally halted filming, but director Irvin Kershner thought these weather conditions were an excellent opportunity to film the scene where Luke wanders through the snow after escaping the Wampa cave. He did this by sending Mark Hamill outside into the cold, while he and the cameraman stayed and filmed inside the hotel's front hall. My Vote: Hard call for me, but Empire Strikes Back
