Inception is a good movie, but it's a scifi movie first and primarily, not an action movie.

Inception. Fury Road is a phenomenal piece of action filmmaking no doubt, but again, the action in Inception serves the overall purpose of the film stronger. Plus, it's part of a more well-rounded film overall.
Hard disagree. The action scenes are the story of Mad Max in a way that Inception, for all its strengths, can't match. Inception is a good movie, but it's a scifi movie first and primarily, not an action movie. I don't think that's fair. Mad Max is just as much of a science fiction movie as Inception (it takes place in an apocalyptic future after all) and is arguably just as interested in gender politics and environmentalism as it is in pure action and the action doesn't do as much to further those themes so much as it arises from them. With Inception the adventure elements are part and parcel with the central technology and the technology is used to heighten the action. |

As it currently stands, we have 5 votes for Inception and 4 for Mad Max. We have 2 votes for Avengement, and one on the fence.
Those 3 voters hold all the power for how this plays out. No pressure, all you have to do is decide a champion. No big deal whatsoever.

Hard disagree. The action scenes are the story of Mad Max in a way that Inception, for all its strengths, can't match. And yet for all of Mad Max's non-stop madness, the juggling act of Inception's various simultaneous action scenes in its last 45-60 minutes is more impressive to me.
Plus, as much as I love Mad Max, the purpose behind its action is a bit shallower than Inception's.

Seriously this thread is the first that I've heard of Inception being an action movie. I've always considered it a sci-fi movie with action scenes, like Blade Runner. Blade Runner is a better movie than John Wick for example but as an action movie John Wick stands above it. I think there are some of us who interpret that differently.

Inception is far more of an action movie than Blade Runner. Blade Runner is essentially a film noir set in the future with a couple of violent scenes. Inception is a full on action heist movie with several shootouts, a showstopping fight scene in distorted gravity, and climaxes with a raid on a mountain fortress straight out of a James Bond movie. You can like one movie or the other better, but this notion that Inception is in any way not an action movie seems kind of ludicrous to me and basically seems to put an artificial limit on what movies in the genre are "allowed" to accomplish. |

It's more simple for me. Why am I watching the movie? If I'm watching Mad Max or John Wick or Die Hard it's because I want to watch a film primarily for the action and if done well it will have the elements of a good movie like a serviceable plot, characters etc. There are a lot of fun movies even featured in this tournament that were cool action movies but not so great films overall. To me the point of an action movie is the action. I'm watching it for the action. If they made a Mad Max sequel that had a great story, rich themes but no action I'd be pretty pissed. That's why I would consider The Matrix to Terminator be an apt crossover, if a Matrix movie would have been named the best action movie I wouldn't have a problem. I don't think the main intent of Inception is to highlight the action scenes, the action scenes are ancillary to the story and not one of the main points of it. When I think of action movies I think of Commando or Rambo or John Wick. I never put Inception in that category which in my opinion might even be a credit to the movie. But that's just me.

Okay, so I see the argument on both sides. As straight up high octane action, Fury Road is a masterpiece. Its hard to argue that. Now, I hate genre pigeonholing, bu I would probably classify Inception as action above all else also. And I like Inception better, but barely. They are both strong contenders.
