Theodore. Phoenix's work in The Master is fantastic, but I love Her so fucking much. We know Phoenix can play manic, depressed, etc. but the understated nature of his work as Theodore in Her is mesmerizing.

Pesci. In some ways I don't think he's ever been better. I loved the subtle, quiet nature of his character in The Irishman. Such a complete flip from his standard fare and he nailed it.

43. Mad Men, Season 4, Episode 7- The Suitcase

Last week, Don’s downward spiral into alcoholism seemed hopeless. There was just no way you could imagine that he would suddenly decide to enroll in AA, go cold turkey, or disappear to some rehab center. It seemed as if he might be forever fershnickered. And Peggy’s fate seemed just as ominous: She was getting so little respect there seemed no way for her to continue on at SCDP. Both seemed trapped. Last week, there seemed to be no way out. But this week, a mouse somehow wriggles its way into the airtight, glass-and-steel box offices of SCDP. “You know what? There’s a way out of this room we don’t know about,” says Don. As it turns out, he might be right.

The episode was essentially a history-changing two-hander: Peggy vs. Don in the main bout, with Cassius Clay vs. Sonny Liston and a few other supporting characters on the undercard. Only in this episode would the bracingly frank racism—“You’re such a Jew” and “If I wanted to see two Negroes fight, I’d throw a dollar bill out my window”—seem like small potatoes. Only in this show, would it seem barely notable that Bert Cooper’s secretary, Ida Blankenship, was revealed to be the “Queen of Perversions” or that Bert himself was balls-less (turns out Matt Weiner wasn’t taunting his fans with that “Lyle Evans” namedrop a few episodes ago, he was setting up one hell of a joke). Only in this episode could the tenth-most interesting scene be the one in which Duck nearly shat on Roger’s pristine white space chair before striking some batshit Jean-Claude Van Damme I’ve-killed-seventeen-men pose. Has slurring, silly Roger really lost it? Did Liston take a dive for the Mafia? Who cares? Onto the main bout!

Breaking Bad has become identified, and rightly so, with its harrowing ordeal episodes: "Cat's in the Bag," "Four Days Out," and now "Fly." The latest example of this genre takes it in a stunning new direction. "Fly" features — and takes to a new level — the Aristotelian unity of time and place, the arc of self-realization, and the bonding between characters that characterize the examples from Seasons 1 and 2. My husband called it a "microcosm" of the series in a tweet after we watched the screener last night, and predicted that it would prove divisive among fans. Because unlike "Bag" and "Four," "Fly" boldly organizes its one-act morality play around something insignificant and accidental. This isn't life and death, either of our antiheroes or of their antagonists. This is irrational obsession.

But that very fact shows where we've come in the series, and in Walter's central speech, where he heartbreakingly speculates on what would have been the perfect moment for him to die before he got to this nadir, he articulates that exact point. "Fly" asks the Season 3 question: "Why am I doing this?" The question arises in the context of a pesky fly in whose pursuit Walter spends about twenty-four dedicated and sleepless hours, enlisting Jesse after a fruitless night and arguing that their cook required absolute standards of cleanliness incompatible with the presence of a fly. (He's unconvinced by Jesse's reasonable response that dirt is immaterial when you're making a destructive, addictive drug: "We probably have the most unpicky customers in the world.") There was always an answer to the question before, or at least there was in Walter's head. He couldn't articulate it to Skyler, of course, and his failure to communicate what he understood so clearly is pushing him toward the realization that it might not have actually been so clear: "There must exist certain words in a certain specific order that would explain all this," he insists with the desperation of a man at the end of his rope. "All this" being how we got here, the decisions made with their comprehensible rationales, the steps from the school parking lot to a gleaming lab where Walter churns out thousands of pounds of horrific poison for a huge paycheck.

Developed by Graham Yost, it is based on Elmore Leonard's Raylan Givens stories, particularly "Fire in the Hole". Timothy Olyphant portrays Raylan Givens, a tough deputy U.S. Marshal enforcing his own brand of justice. The series revolves around the inhabitants and culture in the Appalachian mountains area of eastern Kentucky, specifically Harlan County where many of the main characters grew up. It also features Lexington, Kentucky where the local U.S. Marshals office is situated.The series, comprising 78 episodes, was aired over six seasons and concluded on April 14, 2015."
