10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (2016)
Because a movie about characters sheltering inside from a dangerous force outside suddenly feels very timely. Anyway, my thoughts on this are still largely the same. I honestly love the first 2/3rds - 2.75/3rds of this movie. That stuff is a tightly-constructed and expertly-executed paranoia-fueled claustrophobic thriller with remarkable tension, engaging performances, skillful direction and enough of a question mark hanging over events to make the situation for Michelle, Emmett and Howard that much more precarious. But the last fifteen minutes...they're not bad necessarily, but the movie could've ended earlier -- say with just a close-up on Michelle as she starts to take everything in before cutting to black -- and it would've been way more effective. But because this is a Cloverfield movie, those last fifteen minutes have to be included. Ultimately, I'm okay with it, but I just feel like this movie could've just stayed focused on the bunker aspects and been just as strong, if not stronger, without the Cloverfield connection. Still, though, this holds the hell up.

SnoBorderZeroUNCLE DREW (2018)Maybe it’s the Corona talking but this was great. Sincerely the most fun I’ve had watching a movie these past two weeks. Made me forget we were in the apocalypse. I wouldn’t necessarily say it’s a good sports movie. There was no real stakes to any of the basketball matches. Space Jam felt more important than this. LOL. But I loved the cast and the humor and its overall feel-good nature. Better than Lawrence of Arabia!

Still, though, this holds the hell up. I would have considered the movie to be great if it had kept its original title "The Bunker" or something like that, leaving the last 15 minutes a complete surprise. I firmly believe it was meant to be. That the fact that it was aliens in the end was part of the original script that was meant to be a surprise. Then the rights for distribution were bought and the movie was retitled "10 Cloverfield Lane" with the shot of the mailbox an added scene. I think if you could show someone this movie for the first time without the foreknowledge of what Cloverfield is, it could be a cool experience.

TAG (2018) Dear SnoBorderZero, If the Corona hasn’t killed you yet, allow me to update you on the latest feel-good comedy I watched during this odyssey. It’s a screwball yuk-fest about a group of grown-ass men engaging in a 30-year tag battle. All your favorite actors are in it. Don Draper. Hannibal Buress. Andy from the Office. Julius Pepperwood. And Hawkeye! There’s a lot of physical humor. Your preference, as an intellectual. But there’s also a giant glowing heart are the core of it.

Tag is a funny movie. And indeed surprisingly heartfelt by the end...though the shift is a little jarring at first.

THE LONGSHOT (2019) SnoBorderZero, I love Seth Rogen but he wasn’t right for this role. The ultra liberal speechwriter for the presidential candidate, who he is also romancing. You need someone with wit and charm, not goofy pot-head Seth Rogen. LOL. Movie is alright, but could have been great.

Yeah, it's alright. Not plausible in the slightest but it's got good humor and Theron and Rogen work surprisingly well together.
Agreed though, it could've been something really special but it ends up being just fine.

DOCTOR DOLITTLE (1967)This was worse than the Robert Downey Jr one. Incredible. A dogshit movie forever immortalized as part of the historically significant 1967 Best Picture line-up of Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Not all of these movies are equally good, but they're all important and interesting in a way Doolittle isn't. I'd highly recommend Mark Harris's book Pictures at a Revolution, which looks at the production history of all five. Good shit. I took you up on your recommendation and bought Mark Harris' book, just got here yesterday. Looking forward to reading it, it sounds great!

And if you like it, you might wanna give Five Came Back a whirl. It's Harris's second back and looks at five Hollywood filmmakers and their experiences in WWII: John Ford, John Huston, William Wyler, Frank Capra, and George Stevens. Netflix adapted it into a documentary a couple years ago.

A GOOFY MOVIE (1995)
Fun fact: A Goofy Movie was the first movie I ever saw in theaters. So with that in mind, I still have something of a soft spot for it. But watching it again all these years later...it actually holds up pretty well. And I think it's because the emotional core of the story feels so honest and heartfelt. "Emotional core" may be sort of an odd thing to say about a movie titled A Goofy Movie, but there IS effort put in there, in that respect. Sure, it may just be the standard "father and son have trouble relating to each other" trope we've seen done a million times before, but what makes the difference here is that it feels genuine. There are a few scenes here -- again, in a movie featuring Goofy, need I remind you -- that do carry some weight to them because the movie does a good job of selling not just the Goofy/Max dynamic, but also the budding romance of Max and Roxanne. This movie is only about 70 minutes in change not counting the end credits, and the script is pretty concise in handling the main beats, but also surprisingly effective. Of course, there's no shortage of slapstick here. But in addition, there are a few quieter moments (stuck in the car scene) that work surprisingly well. Not only that, but the soundtrack is solid as well. After Today is a really catchy song, as is On The Open Road, plus the two Powerline songs are cheesy 90's-style tunes in just the right way. A Goofy Movie is by no means in Top Tier Animated Disney, but a lot more thought is put into it than you'd expect. Which makes for a legitimately entertaining watch.

I saw about half of A Goofy Movie in theaters. My aunt and I were seeing Casper while my mom and uncle saw Braveheart. Didn't realize Braveheart was three hours long so had extra time after Casper was over so we snuck into the end of A Goofy Movie.
