THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (1976)I forgot how “triggering” this movie could be towards the PG Cooper Generation. Sorry, Grandpa. Anyway, I rather like Josey Wales. I think it's easily the best directed thing Eastwood made before Unforgiven. It's been a while since I've seen it, but as you say, it balances Western action with melancholy drama nicely. THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES (1976)I forgot how “triggering” this movie could be towards the PG Cooper Generation. You think that's triggering? Wait till kids find out that The Searchers exists. It's funny, I've had to teach The Searchers to first-year students twice now and it is a pretty challenging thing, especially since the film is about racism and is also quite racist at points. For me, that tension is what makes the movie brilliant and so fascinating, and it's fun to work with students as they process their own thoughts. Part of the issue though is most of these students have no real sense of American westerns made between the 30s-50s. Their frame of reference for the genre is stuff like The Revenant, Tarantino's westerns, and maybe the Dollars Trilogy. So most don't have any context for how Native Americans were portrayed in Old Hollywood westerns and consequently don't understand why The Searchers is bolder and more self-critical. Hell, I remember when I was a first-year student a prof saying something like "When you think of Westerns, Indians are one of the first things that come to mind" and being a bit baffled given my go-to Westerns at the time were a lot more Leone and a lot less Ford.

I haven't seen Outlaw Josey Wales. And I'm sure I'll really like it. But it's not as good as Lawrence of Arabia. Or else I would've seen it already Neverending.

THE MONSTER SQUAD (1987)Wolfman’s got nards! The plot to this Goonies knockoff is a bit dumb. Some shit about amulets and wormholes. But it makes up for that in spectacular fashion by oozing with charm, showcasing near-great horror iconography and featuring kickass action scenes. The Monster Squad is pure fun. DAYS OF THUNDER (1990)It’s Top Gun... but on the race track... without the camp. It’s alright. Probably the last of the old school Tony Scott movies. FLED (1996)Let’s take 1958’s The Defiant Ones and turn it into a dumb action movie. I’d complain. I’d mock. But sadly, by 1996, Hollywood had become very competent in making dumb action movies. You had to really try to make a truly bad one. Even casting Stephen Baldwin couldn’t sink the ship. This is what we used to describe as “turning your brain off.” Ignore the plot and just enjoy the spectacle. Or in this case, watch Laurence Fishburne take his role way too seriously. Dude probably thought this was gonna be the Black Fugitive.

DON JON (2013) I’m convinced Joseph Gordon-Levitt made this movie for the following reasons: 1) He wanted an excuse to dry hump Scarlett Johansson. 2) He needed an outlet to vent about the lack of decent blowjobs in the dating scene. “How Millennial women killed the oral sex industry”. 3) He wanted to have sex with Brie Larson, so he cast her and gave her one line. We call that the SnoBorderZero Maneuver. 4) He did it to please his gay fans. That bod. 5) He needed an excuse to watch porn. “I’m doing research.”

HOTEL ARTEMIS (2018)Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation) and his friends made a movie. They had fun. Do we? ... sure. I can see this becoming a cult hit at some point. The next PG Cooper will rave about it. MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS (2018)Margot Robbie in crazy hair & make-up deserved soooooo much better. This could have been a camp Classic, but it’s an historical drama snoozefest. I thought the Favourite had over-shadowed it, but nah, this movie didn’t make the team. Got cut at try-outs. THE HUSTLE (2019)Doomsday’s wife will love it. I expected it to be total horseshit ... but it’s actually pretty decent. Better than Mary Queen of Scot. That’s for sure.

Gah my wife loves Rebel Wilson. Not sure if she knows she's in Cats but I plan on drink-watching that next weekend.

DOCTOR DOLITTLE (1967)This was worse than the Robert Downey Jr one. Incredible. KING KONG (1976)I’ve had my issues with this movie. Still do. But I’ve become less picky about it. I think I rather watch this than the Peter Jackson one. It has enough unintentional humor to make it entertaining. King Kong straight-up wants to fuck Jessica Lange. What were they thinking? This movie was a couple of scenes away from being a porno.

Dude, I could have told you the 60's Dolittle was shittier than the Downey one. It's like not even close.
Bizarre to believe that the best Doctor Dolittle movie is the Eddie Murphy one.

DOCTOR DOLITTLE (1967)This was worse than the Robert Downey Jr one. Incredible. A dogshit movie forever immortalized as part of the historically significant 1967 Best Picture line-up of Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, In the Heat of the Night, and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Not all of these movies are equally good, but they're all important and interesting in a way Doolittle isn't. I'd highly recommend Mark Harris's book Pictures at a Revolution, which looks at the production history of all five. Good shit.

SOMEWHERE IN TIME (1980) This is one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen. Literally, zero logic went into it. It begins in 1972. Christopher Reeve is minding his own business when a random old lady hands him a pocket watch and says to him, "come back to me." Flash forward to 1980. Reeve is staying at a hotel and sees a portrait of the old lady when she was young and it's Jane fucking Seymour. Naturally, he gets a boner. When the blood returns to his brain, he remembers a college professor of his who had a nonsensical theory for time travel. You lay in bed and hypnotize yourself into time traveling. What? It works somehow and Christopher Reeve transports himself to 1912 where he meets and ultimately has sex with Jane Seymour. Soon as that happens he awakens from his hypnosis, back in 1980. So this is the ultimate Rip n Dip story. Except it isn't. Christopher Reeve is distraught by what happened, and like Natalie Portman in Revenge of the Sith, dies of a broken heart. The movie then ends with Reeve and Seymour reuniting in heaven. What?Somewhere in Time was incredibly popular when I was a kid, as Doomsday will no doubt attest to. It was on TV all the time. I'd catch bits & pieces of it cause Superman is in it. But never in my wildest dreams would I have expected it to be this fucking stupid. It seemed like a cute little chick flick. Still is, really, but you really need to leave your brain at the door.

LITTLE WOMEN (1994)The Greta Gerwig version is soooooo good it’s difficult to embrace any other adaptation of the novel. But I can see someone like PhantomKnight preferring this one. Christian Bale is less of a fuckboy than Timothy Whats-His-Face and Gabriel Bryne is waaayyy better than doofus French boy. I guess if you want more of a “love story”, this is the version for you. But if you want the “girl-power” version, stick with Greta. HACKSAW RIDGE (2016)This is probably Mel Gibson’s worse movie, next to Man Without a Face, evident by Doomsday sleeping through it. It’s sappy as hell. But the battle scenes are fucking great. That’s the Mel Gibson we all know and love. There’s a goddamn flamethrower for crying out loud. But if you want a similar, but possibly less shitty version of this movie, there’s Mel Gibson’s We Were Soldiers. Doomsday stayed awake for that one.

I gave Hacksaw a pass at the time, but I also saw it the same night Trump was elected, so my priorities are elsewhere.

Mel Gibson's best directed movie is his remake of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
