If you can hang with it you'll love it.

Akame vs. Esdeath was the battle I hoped it would be, but I agree with your opinion about the finale. Apparently, there is a lot they cut out from the manga, but they did manage to tie up all the loose ends. This series, and Akame the character, deserve a bigger story, and I hope they get it. That being said, this is one of my favorite anime of the past year or so. I have a feeling this isn't the last we'll be seeing of Akame.
