DC’s winning streak continues with Birds of Prey. After Harley breaks up with the Joker, all her protection is gone and every low-life in Gotham wants her dead. On top of that list is Black Mask. Instead of killing her, however, he hires her to track down a diamond. That’s where the Birds of Prey come in. All the ladies are well-cast and have decent screentime except for Huntress who’s largely absent from the story. Margot Robbie was kinda iffy in Suicide Squad but she’s quite good in this. My understanding is that the John Wick team was brought in to fix the movie after poor test screenings. It shows. The action scenes are really good and take the movie to the next level. There’s lot of humor and it’s mostly good. No real complaints. Movie is overall very enjoyable. Script is a bit lacking but whatever. DC is still benefiting a bit from low standards. It’s still a surprise when these movies turn out to be good. For the record, I liked it more than Wonder Woman and Aquaman but less than Joker.

My boots on the ground contact told me this was a disaster but I believe that was pre-reshoots. By all accounts it sounds like a lot of the problems may have been fixed which is good news. I'm never going to watch it but good news nonetheless.

It's certainly better than Suicide Squad, but I'm glad I just caught it at a matinee at the local Rave. Definitely not worth full price at The Alamo. I kinda wish they'd had Harley leave Gotham after parting ways with The Joker to Bludhaven. As it was, I kept wondering where the hell Batman was, especially at the end. The Birds of Prey angle didn't really work for me. I'm probably just too familiar with the comics incarnations. Renee Montoya being played by Rosie Perez was a particularly odd choice. She's always been the young rookie cop, not the grizzled veteran who's too old for this shit. She's also supposed to become The Question. Squandered potential. Cassandra Cain down right pissed me off. She's a great character in the comics, and this movie did nothing more than use her name and keep her Asian descent. More squandered potential. I'd have liked to have seen more in the way of twisted visuals for how Harley sees the world around her, and Poison Ivy, who was conspicuously missing.

We'll to be fair, the storytelling in this movie is a mess but an intentional one. The non-linear narrative is meant to reflect the scatterbrained narrator the film has, as it jumps from "This happened...then this happened...but this happened first...and oh yeah there's something important I forgot to tell you that happened even before that...now that we're caught up..."
WB was banking hard on Harley being DC's Deadpool. Harley's fun in the movie, but the Birds of Prey element is super tacked on.

I enjoyed it. Story really wasn't anything special, but the style is what kept this movie fun to watch, that and Margot Robbie. As already said, the way in which the story's told makes sense and suits the film well, considering its main character/narrator. They were definitely going for a Deadpool vibe overall and while this wasn't really on the level of that one, it still provided me with a good time.
Though, really, the title should've been Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey. Works as a Harley Quinn vehicle, but it's like halfway through, Christina Hodson forgot she was writing a movie called Birds of Prey and hurriedly put that development in.

This always seemed like a Harley movie, and it was a good one, so I didn't have much expectation and wasn't let down. Chris Messina and Ewan McGregor were both incredible, too. |

Yes, this was definitely intentional, but it was still driving me nuts. When they finally got past the jumps, though, I was able to settle in a little more. |

I think the problem was less in the title and more in making a hard-R movie featuring a character that's popular among pre-teen/teenage girls. Not every comic book character needs to be Logan-ized.

Enjoyed it. Could tell when the reshoots started kicking in. DC again gets one above average.
