And here we go. These write-ups will be more brief.
3. Birdman (2014)
This film feels even more relevant now, what with the whole recent Martin Scorsese v. Marvel drama. Birdman is notable for its one-take format, but that's not the only thing this film has going for it. It has meaningful allegories, fascinating and flawed characters brought to life through riveting performances, and a pitch perfect blend of drama and dark comedy. It's a movie I never get tired of. Now...is it at all possible to go back in time and give Michael Keaton the Oscar instead of Eddie Redmayne?
2. The Social Network (2010)
What do you get when you combine the impeccable dialogue of Aaron Sorkin with the amazing direction of David Fincher? A film as great as The Social Network, that's what. This movie truly holds up. So many scenes just put a smile on my face. The pacing, the rhythym of each scene, the performances, dialogue, direction...it all comes together beautifully into one awesome experience.
1. Inception (2010)
Written on my last Letterboxd entry for this film on January 6, 2019: When it comes time to list The Best of the Decade near the end of this year, Inception has a legit shot at topping my list.
Indeed it did.
What's there to say about Inception that hasn't already been said? The film is a masterpiece, not just in terms of genre, but as a film in general and it never loses a step every time I watch it. The detail Christopher Nolan brings to this world is intricate and gives the film a strong mythology but also a sense that this world is very lived-in. The film also does a tremendous job of balancing its mythology, sense of spectacle/action and its more intimate/human component where the character of Dom is concerned. For all the grandiose aspects and ideas on display, Inception always remains driven by Dom's personal mission: getting back home to his family. And the film sells that as well and as hard as its sci-fi elements. Plus, who can forget that awesome Hans Zimmer score?
Inception is that rare blockbuster with weight, and no other movie from this past decade had the same impact on me.
Christopher Nolan began last decade with one sci-fi masterpiece, and now he looks poised to do it all over again.

Very nice top three, PhantomKnight. I was sorta thinking Inception would be number one but was surprised by how high Birdman placed. Fun stuff. 99. A Dangerous MethodBecause this looks like the last great movie we'll be getting from Canada's greatest filmmaker.

I recall that movie being shit. Of the movies in my list it's one I probably most owe a rewatch, but I find it pretty compelling and the performances are pretty great.

5. Midsommar
I'm still not sure the ending sits right with me. It's all kinds of messed up. But this movie pulled me in quickly sand then just held on. The Scandinavian colony idea was intriguing and haunting.
4. Hereditary
Hey, same director. How about that. Again, that ending... Is Ari Aster okay? Should someone check on him, make sure he's doing alright?

3. A Quiet Place
A great premise with execution to match. Lots of cool details here, lots of tense scenes, an oddly quiet theater experience. Loved it.
2. Get Out
This one has grown on me more and more. A nice mystery build up, and a good twist moment when you realize what is happening. You know what? This is going in my collection. I just ordered from amazon.
1. It Follows
I was not expecting It Follows to grab me as much as it did. On first glance it seems like one of those horror movies only teenagers would like, but when I watched it I realized there was a lot of craft behind it. I also think the idea of the creature constantly and slowly stalking you is very creepy.

98. The Place Beyond the PinesBecause this adult drama is an unfairly overlooked gem with an ambitious structure and a really good performance from Ryan Gosling.

If I'd done more than thirty, Place Beyond the Pines would've definitely gotten a mention from me, too.
And good list, Ian. Midsommar didn't hit me quite as hard as Hereditary but it's still a strong film.

97. Zero Dark ThirtyBecause while I definitely wish the film took a braver political stance, I can't deny Bigelow's craft.

The Place Beyond the Pines had an incredible first half but after the time jump it kinda lost me a little. Gosling was amazing and when he wasn't on screen any more it lost its lustre.

I don't entirely disagree. The Gosling story is the most compelling aspect of the film, but I do love the way that story hangs over the rest of the film.

I was still with the movie through the Bradley Cooper section in the middle, but when it transitioned to the next generation it started to lose me.
