As soon as I heard they were raising wages again, I knew they were going to cut hours even more. They've been doing that for years, decreasing hours so fewer employees are considered fulltime so they don't have to pay benefits.

I got off work early and thought to myself, “gonna swing by Best Buy — I think they’re doing Black Friday sales all week.” I arrive and there wasn’t a single parking spot available. Worse than that, there was a huge line outside the store, off people waiting to go inside. This was at 12:30 on a Wednesday.

Although I’ve been anti air pods, my hair is cartoonishly long enough I can stealthily listen to music or podcasts at work. The Apple Store sells that shit for $200 but I can get it at Best Buy for $150 — but I guess not cause of fucking people. Costco has it for $130 but I’m not going to fucking Costco the day before Thanksgiving. I’m not a masochist.

I go to Target routinely to pick up minor groceries (I do the heavy shopping at Costco) and it’s usually pretty empty early in the morning. I don’t plan on doing any major Christmas shopping this year (Trump ain’t sending no more checks) so I’ll likely get some stuff at Target.

Aren't all the sales online tho too?
Considering upgrading a tv but I really don't need it. Only just got the other one outta the attic. Will be needing a wall mount and sound bar however.

I was at my local antique mall today looking for some toys I could kitbash into something interesting. I hadn't been there in about twenty years, but I remember seeing a bunch of interesting stuff fairly cheap the last time I was there. I didn't find much kitbashing material. What I did find made the trip more than worth it, though. Four giant plastic bags (about the size of a pillowcase) of Legos priced at $20 each. There was a fifth bag full of action figures, vehicles and other assorted toys for $25. If I had to venture a guess, each bag has at least $200 worth of Lego pieces. I was shocked that they were priced so low, since it's not exactly a secret that Lego sets are worth big money. Admittedly, they weren't in sets and there's no boxes or instructions, but still. My local Half-Price Books stores sell bags of Lego by the ounce, and they're priced like they know what they're worth to Lego fans. Anyway, they're all mine now. No plans to sell them. As for the sets themselves, it's a bit of everything. Some pirates, knights, space, Star Wars and some Halo Megablox are mixed in as well. Since none of it's exactly organized, it's hard to tell at a glance exactly which sets I've got, and I don't know enough about Legos to be able to tell. I did spot a Rancor, a Wampa, and Groot.
The action figure bag wound up having some interesting things in it as well, such as a vintage Battle Cat from Masters of the Universe, with his saddle. No helmet, though. There's also an AT-ST, but I already have one of those, and this one is designed differently than my vintage one and not for the better. Some Star Wars action figures in varying levels of repair. The Lego bags also had some action figures in them. A few really nice Halo figures were mixed in, along with some random bits of weirdness.
Good day. Good haul!

A bit of an update from yesterday. I decided to try and find out precisely how much of a haul I actually managed, so I weighed the Legos. The total comes to 29.2 pounds. There are some Mega Bloks mixed in there, but the vast majority is official Lego product, not that it really matters. It's all compatible. There were some really weird blocks mixed in (including a solitary Lincoln Log) that aren't compatible, but I'd already sifted those out before the weigh-in. I'd also already pulled out the mini-figs, so it was probably more like 29.4 pounds.

Doomsday, your beloved Best Buy has gone to shit. Earlier this week my headphones died, and so, I’ve impatiently waited for a day in which I could swing by Best Buy and get a new pair. I did stop by Target on the day that my headphones died and got a cheap pair of JBL earbuds for $20, but they are hot garbage and should be in a dumpster bin instead on the shelves of a major retailer. So Best Buy it is. I get there today, grab a pair of mildly expensive headphones on sale and make my way to the register. That’s when the problems began. Where the fuck are the registers? I spot a small line forming at the corner of the store, basically on the opposite end of Geek Squad, by the entrance, and walk over to see a register hidden behind a few endcaps. I make the line and wait for my turn to be attended to. I wait and wait and wait. This goddamn line isn’t moving. So I walk over to the front of the line to see what the heck is going on and see a sign that says “customer service” and a Best Buy employee fighting with a Karen. I wait for them to finish their dispute and ask the employee, “I’m confused. Is this the checkout line or customer service?” The employee says, “both.” I’m like, “um… okay.” So I go back to my place in line and wait and wait and wait. I don’t know how long I was in line, but it was long enough for me to consider using Amazon next time and run the risk of my package getting damaged or stolen. I remember just prior to the pandemic, Best Buy was getting a reputation for its increasingly good customer service. It was their way to combat Amazon and other online retailers. Man, that went south real quick. They might as well change their name to Walmart.

Best Buy has been on the road to Radio Shack for a long time. Back in its heyday it was really a fun place to work but when the physical media left, so did the physical media customers. Now it's mainly for people who want to buy discount appliances. What kind of headphones did you pick up?

Bad news, Doomsday! My 11-year-old blu-ray player committed suicide. No time for tears though, cause I’m long overdue to get a 4K player. Onto Best Buy I go. Sir… What the fuck? Best Buy is totally unrecognizable. It’s basically the Apple Store but with appliances. And yes, the rumors are true, the whole movie/tv section gone. Gone, Doomsday. Gone. There’s a small gaming section and a small vinyl record section (lol) but the whole store is just appliances and electronics. Surprisingly, they had 4K players, but they were buried all the way at the end of the TV section. As far as selections went, they were none. There was an expensive Panasonic and a less expensive Sony. That’s it. I did a quick Google search and went with the Panasonic. My DVD player was a Panasonic. My Blu Ray player was a Panasonic. Now my 4K player is a Panasonic. I’m loyal to the brand without even trying. It wouldn’t surprise me if my VCR player was a Panasonic too. Gonna have to dust it out and check. Anyhoo… Dracula and PG Cooper, I have a 4K player with no 4K discs. Start working on your recommendations. It is a buyers market.

I don't know when Best Buy was in its prime but 2004 and 2005 were some fun years to work there. The CD, DVD and gaming aisles were vast and full, people came in to shoot the shit all the time, for a teenager with few responsibilities and who cared very little about his job it was a great time. I also set the record at my store for the lowest secret shopper score ever. The performance review with my department and store managers proved it.

Hello, Doomsday. I just swung by Target, to get some home goods and peek at the Halloween decorations. While there, I got curious and strolled through the entertainment area. Good news. Target still has blu-rays. Bad news. It’s a tiny section and only has the most newest releases. What made me laugh though is that the vinyl options are a lot more varied. Who would have thought, in 2023, you’d have better luck finding a vinyl record than a blu-ray? I feel bad for F.Y.E. and Spec. If only they had managed to stick around a few more years they’d be making bank now.

The Pier 1 HQ building was in my hometown. The city bought the building shortly after they went under, and has been turning it into the new City Hall.
