Ad Astra - Review
I love space movies and understand the physics/reality issues have to be fudged a bit sometimes (even The Martian wasn't perfect). That said there were just too few things done well (can't walk after space flight, keeping "in shape", etc) and too many bad ones (who shoots guns in a rocket?). James Grey, we get it with the Father issues. I liked Lost City of Z and the themes it touched on with repeating your fathers sins. I enjoyed this movie and the theme of rescuing your father from the abyss. I just wish the relationship would have been fleshed out a bit. Cut the distress call and a longer version of this movie with better choices could have made this a great movie. The set design especially on the moon, including the rovers, the weapons, and the atmosphere of the scenes, was awesome and exciting. But a little disjointed thematically with the “humanity’s place in the galaxy” message taking away from the father/son conflict.
James Grey had an interesting story to tell and I'd love to see a more fleshed out version of this. 7/10

The story was dull, the protagonist was lifeless, and the action scenes are blatantly shoehorned in and make no sense whatsoever. Another crash & burn from Fox. There's no blaming Disney for bad marketing on this one. The marketing for Ad Astra made it look like a quality film, and not a POS. This might have been a good screenplay at some point. Ad Astra has the grubby fingerprints of idiotic studio executives all over it. I've little doubt that the action scenes weren't a part of the original idea. Apes in zero G cannot smash through the bubble of a space suit, period. Vehicles in a war zone transporting VIPs are armored, and have loads of support. The "pirates" all appear to be more organized and better prepared than the US military. As for firing a weapon aboard a space ship, there would NEVER be a firearm aboard ship in the first place. There's no call for combat knives, either. Good luck getting a knife through a space suit, BTW.
The ending was probably changed too, because it doesn't make sense either. Tommy Lee Jones is broadcasting power surges because he's trying to contact alien life. Fine. Why does this require him to point his broadcasting dish directly at EARTH? We are never provided with any explanation, other than he's gone Captain Ahab at the edge of space and gone bibbledy. He is a driven man, and wouldn't waste what little time he has left screwing with Earth for no good reason.

Saw it last night and really enjoyed it. Its kind of a slow burner which normally I don't like but it didn't bother me too much. There were a couple of things that were a bit unrealistic but that's Sci Fi for you. 7.5/10

I loved this movie so very much. Maybe my favourite of the year. No joke...as I was walking out of this movie yesterday, I thought to myself at one point, "I wouldn't be surprised if Coop called this his favorite of the year." Cause this seemed to have a lot of the same kind of stuff you loved about Annihilation last year.
That's in no way me throwing shade at you or this movie, because I ended up really liking it, too.

This is good. Maybe even very good. I don't agree, that it is that much better than First Man, but I digress.
I am a fan of James Gray and there is a lot he gets right here. It's visually stunning, with some of the best cinematography of the year, a solid score and some great stuff out of Pitt.
In terms of Gray's work, this isn't the first to deal with a father/son or family dynamic. It has showed up in his other movies, most recently with The Lost City of Z. I personally think that aspect of the flick is more satisfying in Lost City. I think with this, you have a lot of buildup towards a Pitt/Tommy Lee Jones encounter, and by the time you get to it, it feels kinda flat and/or rushed.
I also feel like there is a big theme of exploration and the idea of discovery. Discovering potential life forms, for example. And that also feels a little underwhelming. On the flip side, there is a theme of self discovery with Pitt's character, about what kind of man he wants to be, and how much he wants to be like his father. That I thought was pretty well done.
Overall, it was a pretty good movie, one I mostly enjoyed. It was very well grounded and a fresh movie experience, both of which I can very much get behind.

Way better than first man. Let's just call it first hour. The first hour in this was quite interesting and very much had my attention.
Talk about ending with a whimper. And since they based it in our reality the physics were a legitimate concern. Didn't love the tropes and undertones delivered with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Voice over was bad but also poorly written. Thinking those brad Pitt isn't a leading man articles are onto something.
Meh.

I tend to like hard science-fiction, but all the same I was not expecting to be so thoroughly moved by Ad Astra. The film is set in the near future and revolves around a dangerous anomaly coming from Neptune. Major Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) is sent on a journey to investigate and stop the anomaly, a particularly fraught goal given his own father (Tommy Lee Jones), previously thought to be dead, appears to be alive and at the center of the chaos.
The core story here certainly interesting in its own right, and the film does an excellent job showing the danger and peril of the journey. There are a handful of set-pieces here which are highly intense and exciting. But it's on a metaphorical level that Ad Astra really finds its power. The central journey is clearly just as much one of character as it is physical, with Roy returning to his past in order to make sense of the person he has become. What follows is a moving story about masculinity and how emotionally distant behaviours become learned and repeated. The framing of Roy needing to keep his emotions in check for the sake of "the mission" is just as much about how toxic masculinity teaches men to repress their emotions and remain hardened pillars of logic at all times.
None of these themes are particularly subtle or hidden, but they are rendered with extraordinary power. In particularly, watching Roy's emotional vulnerability slowly grow hit me very hard. This is largely due to Brad Pitt, who gives one of his best performances here, perfectly balancing the stoic ideal of masculinity with emotional depths that become harder and harder to conceal. Nowhere is this delicate balance more apparent than in a pair of heart-wrenching scenes where Roy records messages for his father. Ad Astra has many of the ingredients of a big movie, and the production value is certainly there, but ultimately, the film is all built around Pitt, and he carries it. The other crucial factor relates to James Gray's direction, particularly his visual style. For all the production value on screen, Gray's style remains elegant and simple. His imagery is often stark and direct, stirring powerful emotions. As the film goes, Gray becomes more comfortable dipping his toes into weirder, more impressionistic visuals that make for an engrossing experience.
Honestly, I'm sort of struggling to put my feelings about Ad Astra into words. What I do know is that I was transfixed from the word go, that I was deeply moved by Brad Pitt's performance, that the film's imagery has stuck with me for days, and that the simple message about opening yourself up to others hit me with poignant force. This is, without a doubt, one of the best movies I've seen all year.
A+

This is one of those movies where the worldbuilding is more interesting than the story itself. Cool tech, beautiful cinematography, crap script, and acting that looked like the actors nodded off after the director said "Cut!"
There are points when I thought the film was growing on me, then Brad Pitt's narration kicks in, telling me what he was feeling instead of letting him emote and the movie loses me.
