PG CooperMovie #1 Stalag 17 (1953)The film is self-aware and proudly declares itself apart from John Wayne era WWII movies. It claims to be the first war film set in a POW camp as opposed to the overt heroics of the front line. I don’t know if that’s true or not but I also don’t care. It centers around a group of American soldiers in a German prison camp. For a movie that’s bolstering its uniqueness, it still suffers from that Old Hollywood gloss. It’s a bunch of 40-year-old actors from the 1950’s on a film set. It totally looks unrealistic and unconvincing but that don’t matter. It immediately sets the tone as a comedy. The characters are witty, fast spoken and a little goofy. It’s almost an episode of Hogan’s Heroes. William Holden, who won an Oscar for the role, stars as a dude who just wants to chill till the war is over. Yeah. He could escape and then get a hand shake from his superiors and shipped off to Japan. Fuck that he thinks. But as his fellow soldiers’ attempts to escape are constantly foiled, they begin to think he’s sabotaging them. So now he finds himself in a position in which the Germans won’t kill him, but his fellow Americans will, unless he can prove them wrong. Stalag 17 is really good. Much better than that Coca Cola propaganda Doomsday made me watch last year. It has the same vibe as Steve McQueen’s The Great Escape a decade later but without it needing to be some sort of action movie. It’s thrilling and engaging through great acting and dialogue. It’s certainly unique among war films in that it doesn’t need to rely on spectacle to get its point across.

Deal. I'd recommend Sunset Boulevard, Double Indemnity, Ace in the Hole, Witness for the Prosecution, and Stalag 17. The first three in particular. I’ve been a Sunset Blvd fan since high school. I watched Witness for the Prosecution for my March Madness bracket. That leaves the remaining three. I guess I’ll make Doomsday happy with Double Indemnity. Have you never seen Double Indemnity? Come on people!

Will probably do either The Platform or The Wolf's Call, will see what my impulses are telling me to do once I have some free time.

Movie #2
Double Indemnity (1944)
Yo. This is all hype. I’ve seen episodes of Forensic Files that were more interesting. I get that it’s the first noir film (at least that’s what the internet tells me; I doubt that’s actually true) but it’s pretty run of the mill. This bird faced chick wants her husband dead, so she romances an insurance agent and asks him to kill the husband and then throw his body off a train to make it look like suicide. I get that it’s 1944 but I’m sure autopsies were a thing. No matter. Edward G. Robinson is on the case and figures it out without doing any actual detective work. It’s a dumb story with one-dimensional characters, but it’s shot well and has amusing old-timey acting. It’s not bad. It’s fun. But it’s not The Godfather.

No love for some of the greatest noir dialogue ever written? Or the amazing ending? Or Barbara Stanwyck as maybe the greatest femme fatale in film history? Coop, you still giving us your last round? Yes. Also, skink, I'll try to watch Shoplifters and/or Ball of Fire tomorrow. I'd say today but it's my partner's birthday and I caught imagine "Babe, we gotta watch a movie for my online film club" is gonna impress her.

I don’t believe that NE actually watched Double Indemnity. I demand an Ace in the Hole review in recompense.
