Luce (2019)
I am sucker for stage-play type movies. I guess "A Few Good Men", "12 Angry Men", and "Find Me Guilty" all put an imprint on me by the end of high school, by no coincidence of the fact that at one point I wanted to be a lawyer. During my Fall 2004 study-abroad in London, as some of you know, my brother was nearly killed during the Second Iraq War. To that point, I'd been a straight-and-narrow career focused student, though at that point my dreams were finance. Being so far away from family when I couldn't tell if Paul would survive the night and I couldn't afford the flight back, I had a lot of time to a) start drinking, and b) find escapism in my "Let's go the the Theatre" elective, which only deepened my love of the genre.
In Luce, we have an superb premise and wonderful character drama/psychological thriller hidden behind deceptive camerawork. 20 minutes in, I could've sworn I was watching a Lifetime movie. Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays the title character, a former child soldier plucked from war-torn Eritrea by his adoptive parents Amy (Naomi Watts) and Peter (Tim Roth). A star track athlete, debate club champion, and likely valedictorian, Luce is the golden child of the school; a smiling expert speech-maker beloved by parents and faculty alike. A chilly post-speech meet-cute between his history teacher Ms. Wilson (Octavia Spencer) and his parents lets on there might be some student-teacher tension, but on the drive home and over dinner after some fill-in from Luce, Peter hand-waves the tension as Ms Wilson "being a bitch."
When Ms. Wilson calls Amy in to discuss Luce's recent paper lionizing pan-African militant revolutionary Frantz Fanon, and the discovery of illegal fireworks in Luce's locker, the plot takes a turn. Is Luce the star athlete/debater/student of his appearance, or does he hide ulterior motives? I don't want to give away the plot here, but the film does a great job of making you question your own biases in how you judge blackness and justice in America, particularly in Harrison's ability to turn on/off the charms, and in Watts and Roth's performances of see-sawing doubt. Spencer is equally nebulous as a character.
The director has a entrancing hip-hop beat underlining Luce's multiple training runs, which only heightens the doubt you have in Luce's true nature. I can tell you I came to about 5 or 6 different conclusions throughout the movie.
I cannot recommend this movie more highly, but I really don't want to ruin it for anyone that has yet to see it.
9/10

DR. MABUSE (1922)This is actually two movies combined into one (similar to Kill Bill). The two movies, The Great Gambler and Inferno, directed by Fritz Lang (of Metropolis and M fame) follows the exploits of criminal mastermind Dr. Mabuse and his journey to control the German underworld. It’s a precursor to over-the-top/cartoon-ish villains, but it’s also a 1920’s German expressionist film. So... imagine if Tim Burton had directed Scarface, but it starred Dana Carvey playing his character from Master of Disguise, and it was set in the James Bond universe. That’s Dr. Mabuse. Nutty movie, folks.

Inseminoid (1981) Inseminoid is the work of a guy named Norman J. Warren, who was a maker of really schlocky British horror movies in the late 70s like Satan’s Slave and Terror. His films do have something of a following and were said to have helped up the ante on blood in gore from what was going on during the Hammer era. This particular film was probably the most ambitious project he was involved in and was actually funded in part by Run Run Shaw of all people. In interviews people involved with it claim that it wasn’t inspired by Alien but… I don’t believe them, it’s pretty plainly a ripoff both in terms of it being a space crew being picked off and in the fact that alien birthing is a major part of the plot. And when you compare this thing to Alien it really looks pathetic by comparison in terms of production values, acting, storytelling, and pretty much everything else. This seems like the kind of thing that would end up on RedLetterMedia’s Best of the Worst, but there has been an odd amount of academic work done about it, as is outlined by the film’s shockingly extensive Wikipedia page. The film was co-written by a woman (and her husband) and has more females in the cast than most movies as well as some weird stuff about giving birth to aliens so people looking for gender stuff in science fiction and horror have made use of it as a reference point. Clearly there are some people who like it but… I’m not sure why because it’s really poorly made. Like, even if there is some thematically interesting stuff buried in it it’s really not worth digging through the shit. * out of Five

That was when I was just a kid. I'm purely focused on getting Cats a page longer than The Godfather now.

I have never seen. I do remember winding up on the Wiki page a few years back, I don't remember how but it was probably through Kevin Bacon effect by doing research for my blog, and going "Well, that's a thing, aint it?"
If it's on Tubi I should watch it.

Looks like I can access a streaming service through my library to watch Return of the Living Dead. Sweet. That was the one I was most genuinely excited for. Okay 1godzillafan, I'll watch this puppy tonight.

Lol. To be honest, I was kind of looking forward to the Roadhouse review, but Return is a fine consolation. It's a pretty crazy movie.
(IF YOU WANT TO PARTAAAAAAAAAAAY, IT'S PARTY TIME)
I'm looking into Sword of Doom. I'm probably going to sign up for the free trial of Criterion Channel to watch it. Despite the whole virus bullshit going on, things just seemed to get busier in the laat few days.

Update: Criterion Channel doesn't work on my phone because my phone is stupid and old, and I don't have internet due to me being a caveman, so watching it on TV is a no go.. I can go to plan B, which is rent from Amazon Prime, so I'll do that after I'm sure my finances are solid until my next paycheck.
