Creep (2014) Creep could be said to fit into the strange little “mumblegore” sub-genre, which basically consists of horror and horror-ish movies being made by people involved in the mumblecore wave of indie movies. Not the most logical combination, but I think the appeal of it in this case is that you’re never quite sure whether you actually are watching a horror movie or whether you’re watching another movie about realistically portrayed people. In this case those people are a videography and his latest subject, a dying man who has hired the videographer to film him for a while so he’ll have something to leave his unborn child. As it becomes increasingly clear that this “dying man” is a total weirdo who may or may not have a wife and unborn child at all things become unsettling for the videographer. The film isn’t really trying to be scary so much as its trying to deconstruct the horror genre with the Mark Duplass character constantly trying to scare the videographer by jumping out at him in a way that’s supposedly funny but is really just dickish. I found the first half of the movie kind of tedious but it did finally turn into something pretty interesting in its second half and I quite liked the dark ending. It’s pretty good for something that looks like it was made for two dollars, though I must say I’d find the micro-budget aesthetic a little more charming if this was being made by actual up and comers rather than something staring a pretty big indie star and produced by Jason fucking Blum.

The Greatest Showman
It's hard for me to decide where I come down on The Greatest Showman. I was actually eager to watch it because although it received pretty mediocre reviews the people I've talked to who have seen it have had nothing but good things to say. Sometimes I hesitate when there's the critics/public discrepancy because it usually doesn't bode well for my enjoyment of the film but I decided I would see what everyone was talking about.
The story of PT Barnum as far as the film is concerned is pretty standard; poor kid becomes poor man, wants to have it all, gets its all, loses everything but learns something about himself before climbing back on top. I'm sure there's a lot more to PT Barnum's life that isn't included as it's a movie that clocks in around 110 minutes, many of which are dedicated to musical numbers. I think the soundtrack is what audiences gravitated to as I recently read that Hugh Jackman is going on tour performing the soundtrack. I actually tried to get invested in the PT Barnum story and how he was able to successfully market a show featuring 'oddities' and turning it into a massive hit. There's some dedication to that theme but everything just seems to happen because it's supposed to and didn't have too much guessing to it.
Truth be told The Greatest Showman was exactly what I was hoping it wouldn't be; a period piece with a modern style and musical numbers. That criticism sounds funny coming from someone who isn't exactly a huge musical aficionado but when the flashy numbers came on it took me out of the movie in a sense. I know a lot of people really enjoyed the music but to me they seemed like standard pop pieces that didn't stand out for me nor were they all that memorable. Many of the visual effects were very shoddy-looking too. When the elephants created for the movie look similar to the stupid elephant running through the streets in Gangs of New York, a movie released 16 years ago, that's a problem. I know there's no accounting for taste and that my criticisms are based solely on that but the Greatest Showman just didn't land with me. It left me with the feeling that it could have been more but instead settled for being a contemporary musical which I think will feel dated in the years to come.

I was right.
But seriously, The Greatest Showman is a very simplistic and surface-level musical and I don't really fault anyone for disliking it, but I think it does have good energy and charm to it. And I really like those songs. But one of the things that kind of bugs me about the movie is how the songs are presented within the movie. I'm not crazy how they kind of break them up with bits of dialogue in the middle of a few of them, especially in how they split The Greatest Show (which is basically their big show-stopping number) into two halves. The songs flow much better on the soundtrack, plus they also SOUND better. Something about the way they mixed the sound for them in the movie...

I'm tempted to go through the rest of Jibbs list just so this thread can see some action.
Maybe I'll watch Silent Running in the near future.

Sorry for putting this off. I haven't been into watching movies for some time.
The Room (2003)
Yeah, it's that bad. As what I can best describe as a kids' play meets a man-child's fantasy meets a soft core porno without the acting, The Room is a movie that somehow can't keep straight the simple and singular plot of a woman cheating on her boyfriend's best friend. Character arcs are out of order with some people knowing things, and then not, as well as old women scolding stranger kids as if they're a lifelong part of the family, as well as motives changing on the drop of a hat. Almost every scene starts with the characters reintroducing themselves with a "Hi, Mark" and "Hi, Lisa," like a film student trying to eat up script pages.
But I think what will leave the largest impression on me is the acting. Something could be said for the bad acting of Lisa (I don't care what her actress name is), but the true Razzie goes to Tommy Wiseau. He seems out of it the whole time, he has an awkward laugh that he brings out all the time, and he just can't act worth for shit. Obviously he can't write or direct, either. The movie is bad enough on its own, but what really leaves a sour taste in my mouth is when you look at the whole thing you see a movie made by someone who hates women and had to play it out on film. The whole thing plays like "Oh, I've been betrayed, I should just kill myself, then they'll be sorry!" The Bechdel Test can be brought up at wrong times, but this movie should be the standard example. Though I guess to be fair, the men only discussed women and threw sports around, so I guess we need a test name for that, too.
As for my enjoyment of the film, I didn't hate it. Movies "so bad they're good" can be so hard to predict and change from person to person, but I did have a few laughs along the way, but certainly wouldn't watch it again.
