I can't believe Coop offered me LA Confidential... IT'S LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL! A lapse in judgement to be sure.

Will be watching my film this weekend. Girlfriend is out of town so finding the time should be easy.

Later than planned, but I finally watched my movie.
As I couldn't find a good enough copy of The Apartment online, I went for 2001 instead.
It literally just finished, so I'll need to stew on it for a while before reviewing, but that was quite something.

The Disaster Artist (2017)
"The Room," from 2003, has propelled itself as one of the "best worst" movies of our time. "The Disaster Artist" is a sort of biopic of the odd Tommy Wiseau, the writer, director, producer, and star of the film. I didn't know what to expect from this movie, if it was going to be a parody or a straightforward telling of "the story." It's played pretty straight, which turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. Did this really have to be made? The story didn't seem all that interesting and I find it hard to believe it would be made if "The Room" was a forgotten movie. The infamy that "The Room" hits doesn't even come into the film until maybe the final 5 minutes.
Having said that, it was moderately enjoyable. James Franco's transformation into this nutcase is interesting to watch and the movie is occasionally funny. I wonder if I would have gotten more out of this had I seen "The Room."

Yeah I probably should have asked if Jibbs had seen The Room. Well maybe he'll appreciate that more since he watched Disaster Artist first rather than vice versa.
Forbidden Planet is still on my list of things to do, I'm just totally tied down right now. It will be done, indeed it will be done.

Alright, so clearly I lied and didn't watch my film last weekend, or this weekend for that matter. I will catch up eventually, but for now, count me out of next round. I'm balls deep on my new video essay (my longest yet), am starting a new semester of teaching, have my own committee meeting coming up, and my research assistant work is continuing from the summer. All that to say I'm unreliable.

2001: A Space Odyssey
I don’t know where to begin with what i hated or what I loved.
Im sure it was ahead of its time in 1968 but in 2018 I cannot take guy in a monkey suit seriously, no matter how legendary the scene.
So… the entire prologue did nothing for me, despite the fact that at the time I’m sure it was the pinnacle of effects.
In 2018, not so much. And now I’m ashamed that it’s taken this long for me to watch this movie.
I also can’t stand the classical music Kubrick uses way too often.
When the monolith arrives, the music is up there with the best I’ve ever heard. Atmospheric, frightening, unlike anything else of the era. Of any era.
In those moments I am completely beguiled and disturbed; I’m also blown away that this film made over $150m at the box office before inflation.
I almost feel like it’s 3 films in one. The third and second acts are truly sensational, and I almost feel like Nolan should be arrested for plagiarism... hello Interstellar… That said, you can tell everything he did was out of affection. It was a love letter. And he didn't need monkey suits.
The ending was rightly inconclusive, and reminded me of Inception (again) in its randomness.
I must return to the choral soundtrack. I’ve never felt more disturbed and uncomfortable, and I’m disappointed that the music that 2001 is remembered for is the BS classical track at the beginning/end. Maybe that was all that most of the boring ****s could deal with…
Did I mention the symmetry?
So much to discuss...

Is 2010 worth dealing with? Anyone?

Is 2010 worth dealing with? Anyone? Fascinating. I think the monkey suits look amazing and that prologue fucks. I would agree that the music which accompanies the monolith is the best in the film, with the next best piece being HAL's performance of "Daisy". Is 2010 worth watching? The short answer is maybe. It's not a bad movie exactly, but like Psycho II it's inevitably a comedown. I love the intro, which recaps the first film in a very ominous fashion, and while the rest of the movie has some interesting pieces, it's not totally compelling. You might be better left off with the mystery of 2001.

Coco
For reasons that still escape me I'm not quite sure why I don't watch new Pixar movies more consistently. There are several I haven't seen (Cars 1-3, both Monsters movies, Brave, Finding Nemo/Dory, Ratatouille for example in case any of you need some selections for future film club rounds) and I also skipped Incredibles 2 from a couple months back. I really can't tell you why this is the case because I greatly enjoy each Pixar movie that I come across. I rewatched all three Toy Story movies last Christmas for no real reason and reminded myself not only how much I love those movies but how incredibly good each one of them is. I even remember stumbling across an article a while back that made an argument saying that the Toy Story trilogy is the best movie trilogy because each one is great, there's no weak link in the franchise. My long-winded point is that while my experience is limited I have always enjoyed the Pixar films, at least when I manage to squeeze them in. Coco was yet again another Pixar movie that i skipped and when I saw it was on Netflix I made the decision to have it replace Forbidden Planet so I could see how it measured up to its predecessors.
Coco is an old woman with a bunch of relatives. She's the namesake of the movie but far from the main character. The point person is her great-grandson Miguel, a boy in Mexico who works at his family's shoe shop but dreams becoming a musician despite the fact that his whole family hates any and all types of music. One day before Dia de los Muertos he discovers that his great-great-grandfather is Ernesto de la Cruz, the greatest musician of all time. He had run out on his family so many years ago which is why they hate music so much but Miguel decides to steal Ernesto's guitar that's on display in his crypt and play in a town festival. After stealing the guitar however he's whisked away to the land of the dead where he meets deceased relatives and with the help of a lowlife named Hector embarks on a quest to find de la Cruz and get his blessing so he can return to the land of the living and fulfill his destiny as a great musician. Coco, like almost all Pixar movies, manages to weave a lot of heart and substance into the story and highlights the importance of remembering your ancestors and where you came from. While the humor sometimes falls a little flat and can feel recycled it's not necessarily a movie that's known for its laugh out loud comedy. Rather, it's a movie that builds to a meaningful ending that tugs on the heartstrings of even a stone-hearted bastard like me.
I think my main gripe with the movie is with the twist that's similar to twists found in other Pixar movies. In the second act we find out that Miguel's great-great-grandfather de la Cruz isn't truly his great-great-grandfather. In fact, he stole his songs from Miguel's legitimate great-great-grandfather then murdered him. While watching this play out it reminded me of the Prospector in Toy Story 2, Lotso in Toy Story 3 and Muntz in Up. All were characters that aided or were admired by the main character until they do a 180 and in fact become the bad guys. The twist with de la Cruz isn't done poorly nor does it feel forced or even predictable, it just felt like something I had seen before already in those other movies. I just pulled those ones off the top of my head too, no idea if it's a trope that runs through those other Pixar movies that I haven't seen. I'm also not entirely sure why de la Cruz was trying to have Miguel remain in the afterlife because it didn't really serve much of a purpose nor did it benefit de la Cruz in any meaningful way.
Coco isn't quite my favorite Pixar offering but it's yet again another very solid turn from a studio that consists of filmmakers who I'm convinced sold their souls to the devil due to the consistent quality of their work. I could be wrong because there are a lot I haven't seen but they've seemed to have found a winning formula that delivers both critically and financially. Rightfully so.
B+ so says Doomsday
I'll apologize for the tardiness as my life has been pretty much dominated by work and fatherhood for the past couple months. I'm done with work for the time being and in the process of lining up my next gig so if anyone wants to through their hat into the ring for next round then shout out.

I'm good to do another round but will be somewhat consumed with 31 Days of Halloween and with a somewhat packed theatrical release slate this month. So, maybe we could do a round that starts soon but has a relatively late due date?
