I also decided to watch Hunt for the Wilderpeople, IanTheCool . Weird little movie. At times it feels like a straight indie film, but then the rest of the time it's a pretty goofy, but very funny, comedy. "I know, we can play dead! ...c'mon, it only works if we're all doing it!"

Still waiting on a couple more but who's in for next round? Will try to have mine by Monday. I have family coming by this weekend, so all week I've been cleaning the place 2 hours a night. I think Sunday's my target day to watch. Sorry!! I'll still be in next round, and will be on time as my schedule's clear for the next 2 weeks after this weekend.

The Music Room (1958)
So thanks to a streaming service which has a shitload of Criterions offered by my city library, I was actually able to watch The Music Room, so that's pretty awesome. Prior to this, the only other Satyajit Ray film I'd seen was the first entry in the Apu trilogy, Pather Panchalli. On the surface, it and The Music Room could not be more different. Where Ray's breakthrough is about youth living in poverty, The Music Room is about an old man of declining wealth. The film follows Biswambhar Roy (Chhabi Biswas), an old landlord in India as time and fortune slowly pass him by. Rather than adapt to the changing world around him, Roy continuously insulates himself within his mansion, desperately trying to maintain his prestige, or at least the illusion of it, despite it being clear that Roy's time is over. This slow decay is highly compelling, and Ray does a great job showing the crumbling aristocracy. There are several beautifully observed moments and Roy himself is a very well-written character. The film also has a great score and the concert scenes set in the titular music room are mesmerizing. The final number in particular is incredible, both on a technical level, and for what it means narratively. The film on the whole is beautifully made and tells a highly compelling story about the changing power structures of India in the 1920s. Ray makes no bones about the fact that his protagonist is largely vein and foolish man who largely creates his own problems, but he remains empathetic to Roy all the same. The film can be a little slow at points and I don't know if it quite captures the same magic as Pather Panchalli, but this is clearly a great work that reaffirms Satyajit Ray's greatness in my eyes.

I'm going to sit the next round out. Life threw me a curveball in the last round and I am currently without internet or streaming services. So unless I rent something from Vudu and watch it on my phone I'd be useless on it.

Actually, I'm going to sit out one round, but will be in the next. Just watched first half of my movie tonight. I should be posting tomorrow after I finish it.

Ikiru
Ikiru, an Akira Kurosawa film, is the story of a widowed man who, after his wife passes away and leaves him to be a single father, decides to devote the last 30 years of his life working a city desk job so that he can raise and support his son, who grows into an unappreciative man. When he learns that he will soon die from stomach cancer, he tries to escape by spending the night out on the town with a stranger he meets at a bar, but soon realizes that he has accomplished nothing meaningful in all his years. He returns to his job with a final new motivation, to fulfill a request from a group of parents to replace a cesspool with a new playground.
Although it wasn’t my favorite Kurosawa film, of the ones I’ve seen, I enjoyed it a lot. The main themes of the story were regret and resolve, and they’re intertwined into some really beautifully done sequences. Two of my favorites were the montage of him and a stranger out for a night on the town, and when he pampers a young female co-worker who makes him feel alive. I have to admit, I really enjoyed the first half of the movie over the second half, when it transitions to his wake, and his final story is then told in a series of flashbacks by those in attendance.
As I mentioned, it’s not my favorite Kurosawa film, but that’s by no means a negative. I really appreciated the tale that was told, as it resonated with me very much and made me appreciate the choices I’ve made, especially during the past ten years of my life, so there’s that. Rashomon still remains my favorite, but I still have a lot of Kurosawa to catch up with, and have yet to be disappointed.

Mustang
One way to describe the story of the human race could be the quest for freedom. The quest looks different for different groups of people in different parts of the world at different times. In Mustang it captures the struggle of five sisters in Turkey grasping for freedom from their conservative and oppressive family.
This is a story told through action in such a way that you could still follow without the dialogue, though the dialogue does help give you a sense of character. The sisters appear to be first time film actresses and do an excellent job. There is also some really nice musical score pieces near the end of the film, which capture the desire to be free and the pursuit towards that goal very well.
One of the things great movies do is to capture the human spirit, and Mustang does a very good job of that with the main character Lale. Lale is persistent in always trying to capture any semblance of personal agency or liberty, always fighting against the social and physical restraints placed upon her. The injustice of how she and her sisters came into this situation will anger you, and their resolve to hold on to their personal strength and vigor will make you cheer for them.

Rudderless (2014)
Some movies turn out to be bad because they have some poor element that really doesn’t work and brings the whole enterprise down, then there are movies that don’t work less out of any particular deficiency than out of the sheer fact that they just aren’t good enough to be worth your time. William H. Macy’s 2014 directorial effort proves to be one of the movies in that latter category. The film, which stars Billy Crudup as a father who grieves for his son (who died as a result of a school shooting) by taking some of the songs he wrote before his death and performing them at a bar venue. The songs, which he does not announce the source of, leads him to reluctantly form a band with a couple of younger guys who like them. The film has something of an interesting setup but it never quite mines it for the drama that should be there and it also withholds a twist that it probably should have revealed early on in order to bring the audience in on the story a little faster. The performances are pretty good but Macy’s direction proves to be rather aggressively mediocre and the story just never quite takes off like it needs to. Also, this singer-songwriter type music generally never works for me and the songs here certainly don’t jump out at me like I think they’re supposed to. All in all the thing just feels very forgettable and it doesn’t surprise me that it was met with critical apathy and audience disinterest upon release.
