There's Greta Gerwig's character (I honestly couldn't figure out her connection with everyone),
It wasn't very clear to me at first either. She was a tenant living in a spare room in the mother's house.

Sorry for the delay, time flies... Passengers (2016)Passengers is a movie that was savaged by critics when it came out last year, in part because the critics felt that by concealing a plot element the film’s advertising was sort of selling its audience a bill of goods. The movie is based on a pretty dark premise about a character who does something that’s pretty hard to forgive, and that’s not inherently a bad thing but it does mean that the movie has a pretty tough road to drive. Let’s start with the positive: that spaceship looks awesome. The movie was definitely deserving of the art direction nomination it got at the Oscars and I definitely enjoyed the way it built out that science fiction equivalent of a cruise ship for the characters to live on and there were some cool visual effects when the ship starts to break down and lose gravity at times. I also generally liked the performances. But I do need to tackle that dark premise and while I don’t find it quite as objectionable as some of the critics did and I do think the film does recognize the difficult territory it waded into and does address it pretty well for much of its runtime. Where it loses me is its ending. I wasn’t completely against Chris Pratt’s character getting a redemption arc towards the end but the movie took it way too far. The notion that Jennifer Lawrence would have completely forgiven him and even continued to live on that ship even if she had a way to return to stasis just because he tried to do one selfless thing strikes me as a couple of bridges too far. Overall, I don’t know, it’s a movie that was compelling enough while watching it I guess and while I have reservations about it I certainly don’t regret seeing it. That said, it’s by all accounts very hard to get this kind of monetary investment into an original concept with no planned franchise these days and if this is the best you’re going to do when you get an opportunity like this that’s unfortunate. *** out of Five

You had 3 out 4 in the tracking thread, what happened? Typo? I understand what you're saying about the end. I think I was forgiving because it's such a Romantic-Whatever-edy troupe, that it kind of washed past. Though if I was doing it, I definitely would have left out the proposal. It felt very unnecessary and YA.

A 3 out of 4 can translate to either a 3 out of 5 or a 3.5 out of 5 depending on my inclination. A 3.5 out of four can either translate to a 3.5 out of 5 or a 4 out of 5. Then a 4 out of 4 is usually either a 4.5 or a 5 out of 5.

I think we had this argument before. A 3 out of 4 can't be a 3 out of 5. If we look at percentages, we got: 3/4 - 75% 3/5 - 60% 3.5/5 - 70% 4/5 - 80%

If we look at percentages, we got: 3/4 - 75% 3/5 - 60% 3.5/5 - 70% 4/5 - 80% Right, but my four star scale is rated on the Roger Ebert curve which states that 2.5/4 is a thumbs down while three or higher equal thumbs up. So if you weigh things using that scale, that would imply that a 3/5 (60%) would also have to translate to a thumbs down, and that just seems wrong because three is a symbolically positive number when stars are involved.

NeverendingSplit (2016) I told myself after walking out of The Happening that I'd never watch an M. Night film ever again. The man who seemed to have everyone eagerly anticipating his next work had now become a complete laughingstock. I had purposely avoided even worse cinematic catastrophes of After Earth and The Last Airbender, and even The Visit which was seen by some as a return to form by M. Night but was heralded as another disaster by people whom opinions I respect. So color me surprised to find his latest film, released domestically earlier this year, well regarded by critics and audiences alike and featuring a skilled actor in James McAvoy playing the leading role where he juggles several personalities. I'll admit that the premise is a solid one, and after the positive fanfare that I'd heard I was eager to embrace M. Night once again and proclaim that the man is back. Unfortunately, while Split has some solid moments and is bolstered by a terrific performance by McAvoy, M. Night proves once again to be a mediocre writer and the film left me wondering what all the fuss was about. Split gets things going right off the bat with three girls getting abducted by McAvoy who locks in a room underground. At first they are visited by Dennis, a militaristically OCD man who initially appears to be their captor. However, the girls find hope in hearing the voice of a woman from outside the door and believe to be saved. They are shocked to find the high heeled woman to be McAvoy as well as Ms. Patricia, another stern figure who is planning with Dennis on delivering the girls into a sort of ritualistic proceeding to The Beast. Also along for the ride is McAvoy's 9-year-old Hedwig, who befriends Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) and provides some hopeful insight into what's going on and potentially a plan of escape. Meanwhile, McAvoy has been visititing a therapist who specializes in multiple personality disorders. These scenes didn't really work for me and just felt like clunky, half-assed attempts at providing some expositional insight into the medical side of McAvoy's plight, but to be honest it felt like M. Night researched for about an hour and threw it in here. Despite my issues with the film, the plot doesn't play out routinely and does have its fair share of shocks and twists that keeps everything moving. Another element I didn't feel worked though were the flashbacks of Casey's sexual abuse at the hands of her uncle. None of this went anywhere aside from a typical M. Night heavy handed "this is why this is related" beat that he attempts to pedal on us at the end of the film, and while it attempts to connect her to McAvoy's character it just felt lazy and highly contrived, which again is how I view M. Night's writing in general sans The Sixth Sense. One thing that struck me is how lacking in suspense the film actually is. Whenever one of the girls escapes, McAvoy grabs them almost immediately. When you think "oh, maybe he's pretending to be one character to help them but really is this one" will come into play, it never does. I honestly just felt like the premise is never reached to its full potential of fun and suspense. McAvoy is such a talented actor, and throwing more diversity into his characters and their motives would've really benefitted the plot. Instead, the film plays itself pretty safe. I know we always expect twists from M. Night, but I was pretty disappointed in what we got from him here. The final epilogue scene linking this film to Unbreakable felt entirely out of place and cheap as well. M. Night really just isn't a good writer when it comes down to it. He has good ideas and premises, but the outcome is often sub par or even abysmal. I expected to really enjoy Split and join in the rallying cries of M. Night is back, but while I enjoyed elements of Split what holds it back are exactly the reasons I broke up with M. Night so long ago. 6/10 Neverending you better watch your movie too, don't think I forgot!

Now that the holidays are over and we enter the dawn of a new year, let’s get this puppy back up and running. Who’s in? If we get enough people I’ll get a new round up in the next day or two.

What exactly would being "in" entail? I'll match you up with a partner. That partner will give you a list of 4 movies to pick from. You'll choose one you haven't seen and watch it. When you finish post a short review with your thoughts on the movie (just go to any previous page and check out how we did it). Likewise you'll also give your partner a list of 4 movies for them to pick from. Keep in mind people like Jibbs and Drac have seen a ton of movies so Star Wars might not be a good selection for them. If you want in just say the word and I'll put you in this next round.
