One week left. PhantomKnight’s reviews have taken command of my Letterboxd feed, my heart breaks every time I see one that isn’t Planet of the Apes.

Silver lining, though: I'm watching it tonight.

Should we pass on the film club for October and pick it back up in November? Most everyone is focused on the Halloween thread for pretty much the entire month.

There's also a possibility of doing a horror/Halloween-themed round.

Planet of the Apes (1968)I have to admit, before 2011, I always found the concept of the Planet of the Apes franchise to be pretty silly. A story about a bunch of super smart apes taking over/running the world? Really? But 2011 was when the prequel trilogy started up, and boy oh boy, did I love those movies. They took what, to me, was a pretty hokey idea and injected it with a surprising amount of humanity and intelligence (no pun intended), and the same can pretty much be said for this 1968 original. Again, here's something that, on its surface, has the potential to be kind of ridiculous, but the filmmakers approach it with surprising amounts of conviction and depth that really takes this thing to the next level. This is pretty first-rate science fiction storytelling. Because it's not just an apes vs. humans movie. This is a movie about hierarchies, evolution, discrimination, the dangers of technology, disinformation, and more. This film packs so many themes into its narrative and handles each so well, that I'm yet again so pleasantly surprised by this franchise. Some of the stronger themes here are channeled through the film's villain, Dr. Zaius, who's a great villain precisely because the film paints him and his ideals in such an interesting light. The conflict between him and Charlton Heston's character feels fully fleshed out and completely fascinating. Speaking of, Heston makes for a great lead here -- in spite of a pretty damn convenient plot device that renders him unable to speak for most of the film's first half. He really sells the frustration, desperation and resolve of his character, and in the instances where he tries to fight back against his captors, the film is honestly really thrilling on top of being really thoughtful. And the delivery of his iconic line truly does have impact in context of the film. Maybe the fact that Rod Serling has a writing credit on this movie has something to do with its high level of intelligence, but regardless, everybody involved with this original Planet of the Apes deserves credit for going above and beyond in overdelivering on this concept and turning it into something much better than it had any right being. This really does deserve its place amongst the great works of science fiction, because it's great stuff.

Train to BusanTrain to Busan generated a ton of buzz when it released back in 2016 and I always meant to catch up but never quite got around to it. Maybe it was residual burn-out from the zombie-fad of the late 2000s/early 2010s and the barrage of obnoxiousness which came with it, but for whatever reason it was easy to keep putting off Train to Busan. Well, no time like the present, and surprise surprise, the zombie movie that everyone said was a lot of fun is indeed very entertaining. The film puts more work into developing the drama between an absent father and his young daughter than you might expect and that definitely helps but the main reason Train to Busan works so well is it simply whips ass as a zombie movie. Setting most of the action on a train (and a couple train stations) is a nice touch, resulting in some very tense scenarios and exciting action scenes. The film also does a good job establishing the rules for its zombies, fast-moving animals who swarm viciously but are all brute force, unable to work the doors and with no object permanence. That second point is especially interesting, and the film devices some clever ways to play with sightlines as a means to circumvent the zombies. The film plays a little fast and loose with how long it takes for infection and a handful of visual effects shots don't look very good, but all told, Train to Busan delivers the goods. It's a fun ride with great zombie set-pieces and a very cool supporting performance from Ma Dong-seok. Very entertaining stuff. B+Alright Doomsday I'm done fucking around let's get the next round on.

Round 233Going to do this round in the new way since we're at an odd number and I want to keep things somewhat spicy. PG Cooper assign to Doomsday Doomsday assign to PhantomKnight PhantomKnight assign to Nilade Nilade assign to Dracula Dracula assign to PG Cooper Let's have the deadline be December 1st. A month and change, we can watch a movie in a month can't we? There's no movie marathon-ing going on in November, I don't think TBS has their fall Bond marathons anymore. Just take your pick and bump that to the top or near the top of the queue. We can do this, I believe in all of you.
