Sorry this is so late.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)
You know, there are certain movies that come along every once in a while where you say to yourself, "Not sure if I ever need to see that." And an Emma Thompson sex comedy would have to be one of those movies for me. Yet, here I am, having watched just that with Good Luck to you, Leo Grande. And you know what? It's actually pretty good.
Because most of the appeal here isn't the sex comedy angle, but rather, it being a movie about two people in a room talking and revealing things about themselves to one another. It's actually not the only 2022 film to take such an approach; George Miller's fantasy drama Three Thousand Years of Longing is almost the same film...just with genies. But I would say this one is superior, primarily because I found these characters to be far more interesting. It really does take a certain kind of talent to be able to sustain interest in a film that's mainly people having conversations, but Emma Thompson, Daryl McCormack and director Sophie Hyde manage to do that. For one, both Thompson and McCormack play interesting characters and their conversations with one another can often be fairly fascinating, but also, the movie has some pretty interesting things to say regarding intimacy and regret that feels pretty mature and interesting. Another asset is that Sophie Hyde keeps this thing gliding along at a good pace so that the conversation scenes never start to feel like they're dragging the movie along. I wouldn't call Good Luck to You, Leo Grande anything spectacular, mind you, but it is surprisingly interesting and thoughtful and well worth a watch.

Drugstore Cowboy
The last Gus Van Sant movie I watched (for this film club no less) was To Die For, a dark dramedy about a wannabe news anchor who will do anything, up to and including murder, for fame and celebrity. I've seen most of Van Sant's heavy hitters in his filmography, Finding Forrester, Elephant, that one movie with Ben Affleck and Minnie Driver. He's a director who has made some pretty engaging and thought provoking films but he's not really a director that I consciously seek out. Before now I had heard of Drugstore Cowboy in passing but movies about junkies aren't usually up my alley. But he's Gus Van Sant and I think the guy deserves some recognition.
Matt Dillon plays Bob, the 'leader' of a small gang of drug addicts who make their living and get their fix by burglarizing drug stores before moving onto other towns to do the same. At Bob's side are his wife Dianne, associate Rick and Rick's girlfriend Nadine. A police officer Gentry is always on their tail and looking to bring them down despite having a hint of sympathy for them. After a robbery that nets a solid take, Nadine overdoses and Bob sets to right himself while putting his life in order. As always with these stories though, walking the straight and narrow is not without its bumps in the road as Bob comes face to face with the consequences of his actions.
On a personal note, I'm not heavily experienced at all in the way of hard drugs nor do I run in circles with people who do them. I mention that because it's interesting how almost transactional and business-like Bob is when it comes to his 'job' which he takes quite seriously and how he treats his associates. His initial, immediate reaction to Nadine's death is almost nonchalant as his focus moves to what he's going to do next. I'm not sure if that's how high functioning addicts process events and go about life but it was interesting to note. As I was finally watching him establish himself with a job and apartment while making a break from his previous life, I expected him to tumble off and find himself back where he started. I'm glad the movie didn't take that way out as it would have been predictable and watching his character make a legitimate effort to right himself makes him that much more sympathetic when things catch up to him despite his best efforts. Reading more about it I understand that this made an effect in the late 80s indie scene and that's understandable, it's a unique take on an uncomfortable topic. It's not as inaccessible as I thought it would be though and while there are dark and disturbing parts of the movie it was definitely worth the viewing.
B+ so says Doomsday

Fire of Love
Documentaries seem to be at their best when the people they are following are interesting and engaging. This is certainly the case with the Kraffts, a volcano-studying couple from the 60s-the 90s. Most of the footage is their own, with some narration about their relationship. The narration is slightly on the poetic side, but not to the extent of someone like Herzog, and its sparse enough that it doesn't get overbearing. The film is edited well, and flows quite nicely.
As far as the footage, it is outstanding. The shots they have of the volcanoes, the lava slows, the eruptions, its all stunning. Whether its simply them with their handheld, or their helicopter wide shots, it creates an amazing visual fabric. There are so many interesting details that they capture. I'm going to be teaching geological processes in a month or so to grade 7, and while I don't know that they'd be into the whole movie, there are definitely parts I want to show them from this.
Fire of Love is a very impressive doc which captivates you with its images, but also makes you think about many different things, like risk vs adventure, living a full life, the power of nature. Check it out if you haven't yet.

Underwater (2020) Underwater was one of those horror movies that got dumped into theaters in January, and unlike the recent film M3gan it was not able to make hay out of that; it only made $17 million dollars and got mixed to negative reviews. It was one of those lucky films that slipped into theaters in 2020 before the world shut down, meaning that even though it was kind of a dud it was still the 19th highest grossing movie of the year, but still. Did it deserve better? Eh, maybe a little better. The film is set in a future where humans have built fairly elaborate underwater bases to facilitate “drilling,” though it’s not clear if it’s oil they’re drilling for, which would be kind of a bad sign for emissions standards in the future. Things go all sorts of wrong in the facility and treated to a sort of cross between an underwater version of Gravity and an underwater version of Alien with perhaps a touch of The Descent thrown in. Personally I kind of wish they’d leaned more towards making it an underwater version of Alien because when the underwater monsters do finally show up they do look pretty cool and I was particularly impressed with the last twenty minutes or so in which they must contend with this giant Lovecraftian beast that seems to be behind all the madness. Where the movie falters though is with the humans because most of these characters are just dull as hell. Kristen Stewart stars and has notably more charisma and presence than many of her co-stars but is really not given much in terms of character or dialogue to work with. The film seems to be trying to eschew backstory in favor of getting the chaos going right away but I don’t think they really pull it off. I can see a good movie here trying to break free; there are some good visual ideas and a canny casting choice at the center and some successful execution but they’re not enough to overcome a rather weak and personality-free screenplay. **1/2 out of Five

Apocalypto
The film takes place around the 16th century. Jaguar Paw is a Mayan rooted in the ancient ways, hunting with his father and occasionally playing jokes on his hunting mates, such as tricking them into eating raw testicles after a kill. When warriors from the rival tribal city raid their camp, raping their women and capturing the men, Jaguar Paw lowers his pregnant wife and child into a pit promising to return but instead he is captured. He’s taken, along with the other survivors, to a great Mayan city. Here they’re offered up as sacrifices to the Sun God, but as Jaguar Paw is ready to be sacrificed a solar eclipse halts the proceedings signifying that the God is satisfied. They are then given a chance to escape if they can avoid the spears and arrows coming at them, which Jaguar Paw does, but he angers the chief process. The last third of the film is a chase through the forest as Jaguar Paw tries to get back to his family in time.
Apocalypto is confidently directed by Mel Gibson and written by him and Farhad Safinia, and it’s a hell of a film. It’s a simple tale, but surprisingly powerful. The film uses Mayan dialect but makes Jaguar Paw and his comrades relatable. It takes place on the eve of the Spanish Conquistadors arrival, with one of the last shots being the actual arrival. Until that point, we are treated to impressive set pieces ranging from grass huts and primitively beautiful costumes in the jungle to more drastic piercings, decapitations, and hearts pulled from chests in the Mayan city. Crazy stuff.
It's a shame we don’t see more of Mel Gibson’s directing. His last movie was Hacksaw Ridge, which I still haven’t seen either. He was blacklisted in Hollywood for almost a decade due to controversial statements he made to his ex-wife that she had secretly taped, and now seems these days he’s been banished to direct-to-streaming purgatory (with the exception of Hacksaw Ridge). Too bad, because he’s a hell of a director.

I wouldn't recommend Hacksaw Ridge, it's a movie that exists to play to a certain crowd rather than express a vision of a filmmaker. Supposedly Gibson is rolling on the followup to the Passion sometime in the next few weeks but he was also supposed to roll on Lethal Weapon 5 and his Wild Bunch remake so who knows what's coming first or if any of that is even coming at all.

Your Name. The anime film Your Name. takes the basic ingredients of the Freaky Friday-esque body swapping movie and uses them to tell a story of teen adolescence and young love. The set-up here involves teen girl Mitsuha, who lives in a small town in the countryside, and teen boy Taki, who lives in Tokyo. These two don't know each other, but they become acquainted when they start waking up in each other's bodies. This swap only lasts until the next sleep, but is reoccurring enough that the two need to develop a system of leaving notes in each other's phones with rules and advice. The first act of the film lays out the details of its high concept and has a lot fun playing with scenarios with the two, particularly as Taki makes Mitsuha more aggressive and defiant while Mitsuha starts flirting with the cute girl Taki works with. This was probably my favourite stretch of the film, the one which best succeeds as a portrait of adolescence (and even has some potentially trans coded subtext). Then there's a twist where things get much more serious and the movie changes gears a bit. That's not necessarily a weakness, a lot of the film's most vibrant and beautiful imagery comes in its second half, but this is also where Your Name. really dials into a very teenage melodrama. To Makoto Shinkai's credit, the film does authentically capture the big, unguarded emotions which come with teen love, but it also requires you ride that adolescent wavelength. I mostly could, but the film did push up against my limitations and I ultimately found myself a bit removed from the emotions of the characters by the end. Part of this is a matter of scale, with the film's third act in particularly really stressing this massive sense of romance and struggle when it was actually Your Name.'s simpler, quieter beats which most resonated with me. This might just be a matter of taste, however. By and large, there's not too much to fault in Your Name. There's a very strong story at it's core, bolstered by some gorgeous animation, and while it's teenage vibes might not totally be for me, I do admire Shinkai committing fully to that tone. B+Btw, I had heard some inkling of "there's a twist" before seeing the movie, and at one point early on I said something like what is she gonna get incinerated by the fucking comet or something? Funny that.
