donny, what services do you have access to? Do you care if you may need to drop a couple bucks for a digital rental? HBO, Prime, Criterion, Hulu, Flix. And yeah, I don’t mind renting.

So, I might have seen Bloodsport when I was very young. I have vague memories of a violent action movie centered on a martial arts tournament, and I know it wasn't Enter the Dragon or Mortal Kombat. I really don't know anything about the movie other than thinking it was very violent. But again, I was super young. All that to say, unless the judges object, I think I'll go with Bloodsport.

From last round.
Quo vadis, Aida?
It's not surprising that a movie about the massacre of Bosniaks at the hands of Serbian troops would be an incredibly heavy watch but it's remarkable how nail-bitingly tense Quo vadis, Aida is. Writer/director Jasmila Žbanić hasn't made a thriller per-say - there are no chases or set-pieces - but she generates ample suspense from the erosion of diplomatic procedure and the encroaching dread as it becomes clear civilians are being rounded up for slaughter. At the center of this chaos is Aida Selmanagić, an interpreter for the UN played brilliantly by Jasna Đuričić. It is riveting to watch this woman do her best to keep things together while also protecting her own family as things fall apart around her in what feels like real time. The film also includes a brief epilogue set years after the Srebrenica massacre which quietly, but pointedly, ruminates on how the genocide has been addressed in Bosnia since, and the ways it hasn't.
I started this review by saying Quo vadis, Aida is a heavy watch, but that's a little misleading. The subject matter is inherently heavy, and the filmmakers treat it with the solemn respect it deserves, but the film is also a highly accessible bit of world cinema told with great skill and gripping emotional conviction. This is a fantastic movie.

I'll be sure to get to Bloodsport soon.

Forty Guns
First off, based on the title there's a little bit of deceptive marketing here. If you knew nothing about the film going into it (like me) you might think 'forty guns, that sure is a lot, it sounds like there's a big fight a-brewin!' Well not really, in fact the forty guns referred to in the title are ranch hands and not hardened baddies who are destined to get the business end of the protagonist's .45. But sarcastic criticisms of the title aside, Forty Guns is a western with some pretty clear influences, both historical and cinematic, but it also bends the mold that westerns to this day still try to fit into much to its credit.
Forty Guns is directed by Samuel Fuller, a filmmaker with whom my experience has been limited to Criterion titles like Shock Corridor, The Naked Kiss and White Dog, movies that don't exactly align with traditional westerns. That isn't to say that Forty Guns is a traditional western, in fact right out the gate you see that Barbara Stanwyck is the lead in the film. Stanwyck stars as Jessica Drummond, a ranch owner who has her thumb on the entire territory. Her brother Brockie is a drunken bully who one day finds himself toe to toe with Griff Bonnell, an ex-gunfighter who is now trying to reform himself and travels with his brothers Chico and Wes. Before long Griff and Jessica warm to each other but eventually tensions rise between Brockie and the brothers ending in bloodshed and revenge involving fewer than forty guns (kidding). It's easy to see the inspiration that the film took from the Earp brothers although it's not exactly a one to one sendoff but it's pretty neat that they're pretty on the nose with such a neat historical reference.
Coming in at 80 minutes, Forty Guns is a fast paced and tight, almost too tight, movie. Sometimes what a story needs is some time to breathe, let the plot and characterization play out and be absorbed by the audience. While there are definitely scenes that establish important connections between some of the main characters, the tornado scene with Jessica and Griff for example and the scene at the gunsmith between Wes and the gunsmith's daughter for another, it felt like we could have used some more time to learn about the characters themselves aside from what their reputations suggest via exposition. That isn't to say that it needed more action or anything, I think it would have served itself if we got a better idea as to who Jessica was and witnessed her actual grasp over her domain, and maybe even coming to understand why exactly Griff wanted to escape his life as a gunfighter and settle down. It just felt like it could have used some of the time that it shaved to pad it out a little more. While I wasn't exactly blown away by Forty Guns nor would I put it with some of the other favs that Coop has recommended (Samurai Rebellion and Paper Moon off the top of my head), it's a fun little western that I'm glad I watched and certainly has something to offer fans of classic westerns.

Bloodsport
First order of business; no, Bloodsport is not the martial arts tournament movie I watched as a child. My lone memory of said film is the ending, where the protagonist wins the tournament then cancels it forever to cease the violence, where he is met by the angry boos of the bloodthirsty crowd. I think. I don't know, maybe I imagined the whole thing. Anyway...
This feels very much like the kind of movie you'd see on RLM's Best of the Worst. The premise sees an American army captain (Jean-Claude Van Damme), trained by a sensei in the ways of Ninjitsu, who is invited to participate in a deadly martial arts tournament called The Kumite. He of course joins for reasons of honour, befriending a fellow American fighter (Donald Gibb), but the two will have to contend with the fearsome champion of The Kumite, Chong Li (Bolo Yeung). It's a very silly movie and there's all sorts of things to pick on at a technical level, including some weak performances, hilariously obvious dubbing, and awkward direction. But even with this flaws, I gotta admit, I had a great time with Bloodsport. For whatever its problems, the movie succeeds as a martial arts movie, with colourful characters clashing in cheesy but very entertaining fight scenes. Say what you will about these actors, their physicality is highly impressive. I'm not just taking about rippling muscles either, but their physical performances in the action are very compelling. The fight scenes on the whole are honestly mesmerizing in their choreography of bodies engaging in stylized battles. Maybe it's appealing to my inner wrestling fan. The film certainly uses heel and babyface tactics to get its villain over.
The tournament itself is also very well-established as this high stakes battleground that does resonate. I was also a bit shocked by how sincerely the friendship between Van Damme and Donald Gibb was taken, including a very tender final scene between the two. There's a thrown in love interest for Van Damme, but these two have way more chemistry and development. I have to assume there's a trove of Queer readings of Bloodsport given this level of intimacy and the film's focus on celebrating men's bodies. The movie also has a rocking soundtrack and I was amusing seeing a young Forest Whitaker in a supporting role the same year he won Best Actor at Cannes for Bird.

Bolo Yeung is terrifying in this movie. Looks a lot different now in his old age, but could still probably kick any one of our asses.
I love Bloodsport. Will stop to watch it any time it's on cable.
Frank Dux made it all up, complete fraud, but Van Damme if it isn't a fun popcorn movie.

Coop I should also add I was going to recommend Sudden Death with van Damme because hockey playoffs start this weekend and LA is playing Edmonton. Not sure if you've seen it but I decided to go with Bloodsport, Sudden Death really straddles the line between enjoyably cheesy and straight bad and I wouldn't do that to you. Not for the film club.

The Last Holiday (1950) If watching old movies has taught me anything it’s that for whatever reason rich people’s idea of a vacation used to be to just travel to an expensive hotel and then just sort of hang around in that hotel all day talking to the other rich people there. The 1950 film The Last Holiday is set at one of these fancy hotels but the main character that’s going to it isn’t rich. Rather he’s a middle class salesman played by Alec Guinness who has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness and has decided to cash out his life savings in order to spend his last days in luxury. While there he starts interacting with the rich and powerful and find he fits in with them very well while they all assume he must be some sort of noble. From there I think this is supposed to be a commentary on class differences and how illusionary they are but I found a lot of this to be a bit dry. Presumably a lot of it would have been more topical at the time. Either way, Guinness is quite good in the film and its concept (which has shades of Ikiru two years prior) is an intriguing one. I don’t know that this is a movie that I’m going to return to much or really view as a favorite but it’s a strong effort and I get why it’s still remembered. Also, Bernard Lee is in it! ***1/2 out of Five
