I'll do Chinatown, though i'll probably end up watching Night of the Kings for your other thread as well. I'll have your list tonight. Remind me of your streaming services?

Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Cable, Criterion Channel (for the month of February), Apple+ (for the next four days), Paramount Plus (in the near future), discs in the mail Netflix, library... lot of options.

Would it be possible to get more recommendations? The only of these I haven't seen is The Killing of Two Lovers and it's only available as a rental. I can give you more if you give me more

I can give you more if you give me more I’ll pick between the two I haven’t seen, all good. For you: Let me know if these work, coop. I checked, they look to be available through prime, criterion or HBO max, on US soil at least. Long Day's Journey into Night Revanche Paterson Opening NightThe Man Who Fell to Earth

Not sure if kanopy or hoopla are your thing. I left those choices off for now, so let me know if you want some more options.

I’ve been listening to a lot of “When Do I Get to Sing My Way” since seeing The Sparks doc last summer (weird to think it’s almost a year ago). Good flick. Maybe my favorite Edgwar Wright output from 2021.

That Sparks doc was wonderful. Absolutely loved it. Why was it so good? It was an interesting history of a musical group I wasn't overly familiar with done with Edgar Wright's normal quirk and wit with an impressive selection of talking heads who always had something colorful to relate about the group. I liked Last Night in Soho just fine, but for me Wright's highlight last year was undoubtedly The Sparks Brothers.

I wasn't as taken by it as 1godzillafan but it is just really well made and crafted. Would have loved to see the same level of work and passion put into a doc about a band I cared more about.

To Die For
This trailer has a special place in my heart from when I was young. I was a little kid and the movie had a hot blonde who was dancing in some headlights, there was a shot of some fully clothed sex scene and Don Henley's Dirty Laundry played over the entire thing which stuck in my brain long before the song really started to annoy me. And this preview played on tv a lot. A lot. So To Die For has always had an unusual, tiny spot in the back of my head so I thought now would be as good a time as any to finally see if this movie lived up to the trailer that was imprinted permanently in my memory bank. Also I knew I was in for something at least a little different but competent after seeing Gus Van Sant's name attached.
Nicole Kidman plays Suzanne Stone, a wannabe news anchor who is obsessed with the idea of being a celebrity news personality. She's married to Larry (Matt Dillon) who works at his father's restaurant and has a plan of working at the family business and raising a family, not quite what Suzanne had in mind. While working on a segment interviewing teens at the local high school, she seduces and recruits Jimmy (Joaquin Phoenix) and his friend Russel (Casey Affleck) to kill her husband so she can embrace her pursuit of fame and success.
To Die For is a really good example of a low key movie that uses what it has to great potential. I always assumed based on the trailer that Stone was this famous, highly recognizable figure that got in deep water but it's quite the opposite. She's a small town nobody who's obsessed with success to the point where she looks desperate to everyone but herself. It's no bother to her though, as far as she's concerned everybody else is a nobody and she's the one who's going places. Kidman plays up Suzanne's delusions of grandeur without totally going overboard which helps sell that she's not completely psychotic and keeps the movie more grounded. The supporting cast (Dan Hedaya, Illeana Douglas, Kurtwood Smith) also provide a good ensemble and the 'interview' structure is equally effective. To Die For is a nice little film that walks the line between black comedy and drama quite well and I would say came quite close to living up to the trailer that I've had rolling around for over twenty years.

I remember my parents being captivated by the Pamela Smart trial on the local news, and their amusement at the TV spot for that movie. Still haven't seen it, but might have to now.

I'll try my best to watch my film before Friday. Tonight I'll likely be busy, tomorrow is the podcast, and Wednesday I'll be seeing Red Rocket so it'll be tight but I will try.

Chinatown (1974)
There was a period in my life where I’d fall deep into Wikipedia rabbit holes. Sometimes those endless scrolls involved film summaries, so I guess that may be where my basic familiarity with Chinatown originates, or maybe just internalizing basic noir conventions. Still, Chinatown often bucks those conventions, adding more to the experience.
As Jake Gittes, Nicholson is pure charisma; sure he has his mandated personal code, but his quips and mannerisms do a lot to sell the character and the plot. Small tricks of the private eye trade are revealed through the script and his character that do well to make the world feel lived-in.
Polanski isn’t shy to change techniques in how he shoots the movie. A near-POV scene where Gittes enters an already broken-into home plays like Michael Myers in Halloween; a zoom on his face at the end action as reporter’s bulb accentuating his discomfort.
The other leads and side characters feel fleshed out, and while I had to revisit Wikipedia to fully understand the plot, I certainly felt the menacing vibe from Jerry Goldsmith’s fantastic score and John Huston’s character.
9/10
