PigWhen a reclusive truffle forager living in the mountains of Oregon is assaulted and robbed of his beloved truffle pig, he enlists his only customer, and connection to the outside world, to help him track down his pig and the ones responsible. I haven't been keeping up with Nicholas Cage the past decade, but this is one of those films you watch just to remind yourself that, despite the B-movie assembly line he's been working on recently, he's a pretty incredible actor. An exchange he has with a restaurant owner that used to work for him is worth the price of admission alone. The rest of the cast is also great, most notably Adam Arkin. Exploring the underground food scene of Portland was also pretty fascinating. I watched this last month and meant to write my review the same night, I had so much more to say. Maybe I'll come back and add on to this review later. 8/10 Yeah, I loved that scene. Definitely a Cinema in Seconds moment.

Leave Her to Heaven (1945)I first heard about Leave Her to Heaven from Martin Scorsese’s documentary “A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies” but had forgotten the title of “that movie where the lady lets a kid drown” up until a few years ago when it came up again somewhere and I was reminded of it. Really it’s probably been a pretty big gap in my viewing. The film is often described as being the only film noir in technicolor, though I think that label might be a bit dubious… but then again the noir label is generally dubious, something applied to a range of movies years after the fact by film scholars rather than anything that was in the heads of anyone making those movies. I do think that director John M. Stahl as something rather distinct from the “hard-boiled detective films” as most film noirs would have actually been described by the people making them. Stahl was not the maker of crime films, he was the maker of prestige novel adaptations and “women’s pictures,” a sort of proto-Douglas Sirk, and this movie appears to have been advertised as such at the time… though the novel being adapted here was more lurid than a lot of the material he mostly worked with. The woman at the center of it all has been called a femme fatale, though again, I think that’s a bit of a misnomer… femme fatales are defined by the way they corrupt the men in their orbit while this lady does her own “dirty work” and unlike the male protagonists of film noir, who tend to find their way into crime through greed and dangerous ambition, this woman is basically a straight-up sociopath from the beginning who kills for very petty reasons out of a sort of pathological need to eliminate anything in the way of her idealized lifestyle. Then there’s her final scheme where she tries to straight up Gone Girl her husband and sister, which is a really sinister little twist, but leads to a final act involving some rather ludicrous courtroom scenes that are some of the film’s weaker elements (though it was cool to see a young Vincent Price). All in all this is definitely a very interesting piece of work that acts as a coming together of various classic Hollywood trends of the era and is generally a really unique offering amongst works of its era. **** out of Five

I was going to watch mine this weekend to wash Winterbeast out of my eyes, but Netflix took a dump on me and I didn't get it working.
Will definitely miss the deadline, but will try and watch via phone as soon as I have free time.

Reversal of Fortune
It's not every day that you turn on a movie and realize that not only was it based on a novel written by famed lawyer Alan Dershowitz, it also features Dershowitz as one of the main characters. I knew little about the movie before watching but it was soon evident that it was based on actual events where Dershowitz took on the appeal of Claus von Bulow, husband of the wealthy and comatose Sunny von Bulow whom Claus was convicted of trying to kill on two occasions via insulin overdose. I primarily knew of this movie as the one that got Jeremy Irons his Oscar before he was featured in the films that I really know him for; Die Hard With A Vengeance, The Lion King and Kingdom of Heaven. The beginning does have some noir elements including the supposed setup on an intricate attempted murder along with narration by Glenn Close whose character is in a permanent vegetative state, an incapacitated secondary character who guides the audience along while her case is wrapped and immediately unraveled.
In a way the structure of Reversal of Fortune is rather unique. It begins with Claus being convicted of two counts of attempted murder after quickly asserting that Claus was probably the one who made his wife slip into a permanent coma. She's rich, they were having marital problems, it only makes sense that he would try to rub her out, right? That's when the film begins, with Dershowitz taking on not only a difficult case but one where public opinion is clearly and steadfastly against him. We then pull the thread on Claus' relationship with his wife, his stepchildren and the events that lead up to Sunny's near death and coma and, more importantly, who was responsible for it. Half of it focuses on the lifestyle of the wealthy von Bulows while the other half is, well i wouldn't call it a courtroom drama, more like a pre-trial preparation where Dershowitx employs his hand-picked students to help him perfect every square inch of his appeal. It's quite an interesting movie whose story and structure had to have been precisely laid out and established for it to work with the end result being a satisfying and sometimes sympathetic look at class, marital woes and presumed innocence even after guilt is established.
And apparently the real Sunny von Bulow was in her persistent vegetative state for almost thirty years before she died. Oof, if I'm in one for more than a couple days just let me go already.

Yeah, I had no idea who Dershowitz was when I first saw the movie almost fifteen years ago and came away from it thinking he was a principled civil rights lawyer. Everything I've heard about him since then has been... disappointing, and re-watching the movie last year was a bit surreal when it came to that character. Still think he had some good points when it came to the von Bulow case though.

Yeah, I mean I guess I can understand the logic of how he takes cases at least in the way it's presented in the movie and certainly agree everyone is entitled to a defense but at the same time I'm also left scratching my head a little bit on some of his selections.

Panic in the Streets (1950)
This movie opens with a petty crook murdered for the poker etiquette fail of leaving immediately on a lucky streak with no last round. When the corpse discovered in the New Orleans waterfront is found to be infected with the pneumonic plague, Dr. Clint Reed of the US Public Health Service insists to city officials that knowledge of the disease must be kept secret to avoid public panic. Reed (Richard Widmark) is paired with reluctant police captain Tom Warren (Paul Douglas) with the aim of finding and inoculating close contacts through to patient zero before the infection can spread further in 48 hrs. What follows is a fascinating blend of a ticking clock along with film noir.
The script gives lots of color to side characters -- coroners, policemen, shipmen, and newspapermen are cast with unknown local actors each given time to show an agency of their own. We learn the deceased was smuggled into the country, and those involved are reluctant to agree with the police and admit their crime. The captain believes hunting down two unknown criminals in a city of New Orleans' size is an impossible and pointless task; newspapermen and other policemen consider leaving the city for their families' safety. Characters and organizations are allowed space to explore their motives and why they would clash. Reed's wife (Barbara Bel Geddes) and son Timmy from Lassie flesh out his feelings of inadequacy and failure in his career path in two tender and touching scenes.
The film's climax of course feels inevitable, but Zero Mostel and a young Jack Palance make an entertaining if fumbling pair of criminals, and the setting allows for a thrilling cat-and-mouse.
I'd recommend this to anyone looking to watch a random older movie.
8/10

The File on Thelma JordonI have been on a bit of a run since the start of the New Year banging out a lot of noirs, particularly in black in and white. A few of them have starred screen legend, Barbara Stanwyck, a 4-time Best Actress nominee from the late 30's to 40's. Thelma Jordon happened to check all of those boxes, so the timing was perfect. Starring the aforementioned Stanwyck as the titular character, Thelma Jordon begins it's story in the DA's office, when Thelma reports a series of burglaries at her Aunt Vera's home. There she meets the handsome, yet inebriated Cleve Marshall (Wendell Corey), the Assistant DA, who happens to he in an unhappy marriage. Despite not intending to see Marshall (She wants to speak to the DA), the two begin seeing each other, and as usually tends to happen, develop a romantic relationship. As the story progresses, we begin to realize that our friend Thelma isn't all she seems, with murder and deception right around the corner. This is a pretty solid noir all around, hitting on many of the tropes or themes one would come to see in this genre. Stanwyck, a veteran of these performances, was fresh off her last Academy Award nomination* when this came out. Once again, she is hard to look away from when on the screen, playing the role of femme fatale to perfection. The beats are a bit predictable as this plays out, for example you quickly see that Jordon does have another love interest, and that not everything she is telling Marshall is true. It's pretty clear from the onset that Jordon has more to do with her Aunt's murder than Marshall may think, although to be fair, he does constantly treat her in this with a certain level of apprehension. He's great in this as well. Noirs tend to have a little more downtrodden or fatalistic endings, for at least one of if not all of the main characters. Thelma Jordon follows suit for the most part, leaving a little bit of hope for our friend Marshall as this story comes to a close. I appreciated that. All in all, this is a well acted melodrama, with confident direction from Robert Siodmak, a veteran of the noir circuit. 7.5/10 In for next round. * thebtskink Stanwyck/Marshall teamed up in 1949's Sorry, Wrong Number, another noir I'm currently watching. Also, the director Siodmak made a great one called The Killers with Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner.
