PhantomKnight - PG Cooper Dracula - thebtskink 1godzillafan - NiladeAhh, the weekend. The lovely, November non-Halloween movie weekend filled with time to relax, unwind, let your hair down and watch a perfectly enjoyable film club movie. I'll think about it. If you do it this weekend Drac will ship you a Criterion blu ray of Shoah.

I'll watch mine tomorrow night, after hosting some friends for ribs and getting sloshed. Then I'll write my review from memory on Wednesday night.
Tonight I'm watching Three Colors: Red on my phone on my porch with a cigar, as Krzysztof Kleslowski intended.

Just finished Bad Times at the El Royale. Will do a full review eventually (very behind on Letterboxd again) but that was pretty good. Not sure it amounts to all that much but the filmmaking is glossy and it's generally pretty entertaining. Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo are a fun pair. Currently sitting at a B

I remember disliking that one quite a bit, but now I don't remember why Maybe because it doesn't really go anywhere? I remember kind of liking it, but also don't remember why. Maybe because escapist entertainment that's small scale and rooted in character is a nice change of pace from $200 million dollar spectacle?

Bad Times at the El Royale
I was somewhat intrigued by Bad Times at the El Royale back in 2018 even if it slipped out of my grasp. Finally catching up with it, pretty fun stuff. The film concerns a bunch of strangers staying at the same motel one night, each of which bringing secrets which soon escalate to violence and conspiracy. Moment to moment, this is a pretty entertaining movie. The cast is full of talented people who each get something fun to do, with the highlights being Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo. I quite like the dynamic which develops between the two of them. On the downside, despite appearances, I'd argue most of these characters are actually quite shallow. Everybody has a secret but all too often that secret ends up defining them completely. Part of what makes Erivo so good here is she doesn't really have a gimmick and feels the most like a person. Otherwise, I'm not sure the film really goes anywhere but it's a fun ride all the same. Drew Godden gives the film a nice glossy look, the soundtrack has some gems, and frankly it's nice to see some modern escapism that's rooted in performance and grounded stakes.

The Invisible Man (1933)
My experience with the classic Universal Monster Movies up till this point has just been limited to Frankenstein, which I watched almost a decade ago now and...maybe wasn't in the right state of mind to appreciate it when I did, so I've always been interested in giving another one of them a go. James Whale's The Invisible Man is an interesting one of the bunch, in that unlike Frankenstein, The Wolfman or Dracula, there's really not an outright supernatural hook to the titular character; instead, it's more sci-fi, in a way. But that, in turn, just means that the focus is put more on how the man himself is made a monster, even without the fact that he's invisible. And that's an approach that I think ultimately serves the film well. Claude Rains' lead performance certainly goes a long way in helping make the film successful, as it's deliciously theatrical and you can clearly tell Rains is relishing every minute of it. He absolutely makes for a more enjoyable presence than, say, Frankenstein because he has a lot more personality to him as a character -- and the fact that The Invisible Man is really just a sadistic dick in the grand scheme of things is another aspect that makes the character so interesting and, in his own way, magnetic. Also of note is the work of director James Whale -- particularly when it comes to the use of special effects for a film of this era. Frankly put, all of the uses of invisibility that are on display here are not only impressive, but also creatively employed, while also matching the main character's sense of impish devilishness as well as the tone of the film as a whole. Overall, I can definitely say that The Invisible Man proved to be a better foray into the Universal Monsters canon than my first one, and while I can't say I loved it, I can say it's a well-rendered and enjoyable movie that effectively represents the appeal of these classic monster movies. I had a good time with it.
