Figures Doomsday would actively support Woody Allen now that he's cancelled. Allegedly.

Like Dooms, I have been going through Woody a ton recently, including some real pieces of shit, but I love Purple Rose. I'll second Hannah and her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors and Radio Days if you haven't seen them. My review coming later tonight. I just watched Stardust Memories a few days ago, where does that land on your list? Somewhere in the 10-15 range I'd say, which to me, is pretty good, considering he's made like 45 or so. I know it's a omage/riff of 8 1/2, so that alone makes me like. I read that it had a bit of a lukewarm response upon release, I think some felt it was a little too indulgent which I get. And though Woody doesn't claim this to be autobiographical, it's still interesting to view it through that lens, and it's even crazier to think this was released in 1980, which to me is maybe his strongest decade of work as a whole. He killed it. What about you?

I think if I were to rank all his movies it would sit in the lower half. In fact now that you mention it...

Alright here's my initial at a glance rankings of the Woody Allen movies that I've seen. Have at it. And no I didn't care for Blue Jasmine at all.
Hannah and Her Sisters Purple Rose of Cairo Crimes and Misdemeanors Midnight in Paris Annie Hall Broadway Danny Rose Mighty Aphrodite Match Point Stardust Memories Cafe Society Blue Jasmine Manhattan Murder Mystery
I won't rank these since it's been years and years and years since I've seen them and definitely owe them a rewatch: Manhattan Sleeper Small Time Crooks
Although Manhattan has maybe my favorite line of any comedy. Start at 1:44.

Crimes and Misemeanors Hannah and Her Sisters Purple Rose of Cairo Broadway Danny Rose Radio Days Midnight in Paris Manhattan Husbands and Wives Shadows and Fog Manhattan Murder Mystery Cafe Society Vicky Cristina Barcelona Annie Hall is an obvious choice and one that's definitely near the top, but I think he has more interesting stuff, so I threw out other ones I really enjoyed. There are more that I haven't named and a few like Aphrodite I need to give a rewatch. Definitely revisit Manhattan. It has incredible cinematography, maybe my favorite of any of his works. The black and white is gorgeous.

DisconnectI think the first takeaway from this movie is that you should never, at all costs, trust anyone with the name Harvey, as one of our characters in the film, Kyle, seems to do. Disconnect is about three different groups of folks whose stories are all loosely connected in the growing age of communication and technology. This movie came out in 2013 so it's funny to see the technology being used then and how far we have come in a relatively short amount of time. From the old Iphones to how Facebook is used, so much of that feels obsolete, or further developed in 2020.
The acting in this is probably the strongest aspect of the movie, and it's what helps elevate the entire thing. Jason Bateman is in serious mode and he has a beard, so we know shit must be real. Bateman plays a successful lawyer, married with two children. His son Ben, a high school student, is at the center of one of the main plot points, as we come to see him being online bullied by two of his classmates, who fool him into thinking a girl from another high school is interested in him. Obviously the girl is not real, and when Ben finds out in a very embarrassing way, he tries to kill himself.
We also follow Frank Grillo, who I only know from the Captain America franchise, not much else. Grillo plays one of the bullies father, a former cop turned private detective. He specializes in identity theft, who in turn helps move another plot point along, this time involving Alexander Skarsgård and Paula Patton, a married couple whose identity has been stolen. The third story deals with Andrea Riseborough, an ambitious reporter who is in the middle of trying to report on a potential sex trafficking ring.
As I mentioned, these are three interconnected stories, a la Magnolia, though the two movies are pretty different in themes and execution. While the stories here are all connected, I do think the movie struggles to beef up those connections. For instance Bateman and Riseborough's stories do cross, but it's very brief, and it's what one scene. There is more meat to the Grillo/Bateman story that eventually comes to ahead, but again, I think it could have been a little more satisfactory.
I think the story falls into some predictable patterns, and the message of technology becomes a little muddled as the movie goes on. I don't think it's fully realized. There is clearly something there, and I think one of the points is a very broad one, which is to say society seems to be too dependent of their phones and computers, but I would have liked to have seen more. There is a lot to like here, namely the actors, who I mentioned before, and despite some of the flaws, the story still does a good enough job of introducing us to the world it created and the players involved. The premise alone has enough to resonate with a modern audience, and it does a good job of making us understand Ben's worldview as a sort of loner high school kid. That is relatable stuff, and I think the attempted suicide scene feels pretty real.
6/10
In for next round.

Free Solo (2018)
I'm mad I never got to see this on a big screen.
Alex Honnold is a "free solo" climber, meaning he scales large mountains alone and without equipment. It's an extremely dangerous hobby attempted by less than 1% of rock climbers, who are already a fairly exclusive group. One missed grip or toehold and he could plummet hundreds or thousands of feet to his death. The perils are all too real, and the documentary drives this home through onscreen obituaries of colleagues over a conversation between Alex and fellow free soloist Tommy Caldwell who is helping him prepare to clime the white whale of free solo climbing, El Capitan.
After beginning with a shot of Honnold at some point high in the rock face above the trees, the film spends a surprising amount of time trying to get into the inner motivations of its hero, along with the film-making friends and girlfriend who support him. Honnold plans his free solo attempt through continued runthroughs with equipment and keeps a climbing journal listing where the best holds are on each rock-face of the climb. Breaking up the practice runs, through narration and archive footage we see somewhat of a window into his upbringing with an emotionally distant father, excellency-prodding mother, and a love for climbing that eventually had him drop out of high school despite being in the gifted program. His stoic demeanor doesn't divulge much; interviews with his girlfriend Sanni indicate he probably needs to have emotion forced out of him. The viewer is never quite clear on what drives Alex, but it's clear enough even outside of his practice runs that he has a special mindset going into his attempt.
I initially found myself wondering if the stunning photography was more because of grandeur of the mountain, or technical skill. An interesting piece I didn't expect was the degree to which Director Jimmy Chin and his crew would play a role in the movie themselves. All expert climbers themselves, they discuss with Honnold and amongst themselves where best to situate their camera to provide the least distraction for him. Having filmed him off and on for about 10 years, the ever-present fear is that they would see him plummet through the frame to his death, helpless to help him or worse, the cause of his demise. That they were able to film such beautiful images in the face of that fear speaks to their craftsmanship.
I'm not gonna lie, when it came time for the real run in the last 20 minutes, I was biting my thumb in anxiousness.
A-. Great doc.

NiladeGreen Street Hooligans (2005)As a "yank" I don't understand football hooligans in the UK. If you're a masochist and have a fight fetish you can find all sorts of excuses to start a brawl without involving soccer teams. To be fair, I'm not sure if the movie is accurate or not. Deexan would have to vouch for it. But it does seem to indulge in the stereotype of that world. The whole thing seems silly to me. There's primates in the wild that have their shit together more than these clowns. But if it's accurate then, well, I don't know what to say. I still find the movie and characters to be kinda dumb but I guess it's interesting from an educational point of view. Maybe if they hadn't cast a hobbit and the dude from Sons of Anarchy it would have come across better.

Let's do it then. Nilade get your review in when you can and give us a shout when you're ready for another round. Round 198PG Cooper - Neverending Dracula - donny frankyt - thebtskink PhantomKnight - Doomsday I know a lot of you guys are going to be doing your little Halloween movie watching ballyhoo so let's have these in by October 19th. If we get them in early then I'll get another round going. franky I guess you know how this all works. Throw up 4 movies or so that you think your partner would dig. Since a lot of us are locked down it would help if you could put which streaming service your partner could find the movie. Go!
