Currently missing internet in my new apartment so I might be a bit late. Damn, haven’t you been missing it for a while? We've only been living there since Friday so it hasn't been that bad, and my lease at the old place lasts until the end of the month so I just head there when I need to work (where I am right now). But yeah, with covid, move-in times have been messy (technically the building is still under construction) so it was difficult to confirm an installation date with ISP.

As someone who hasn't had proper internet in over a year, welcome to my hell PG Cooper. Before I bought this condo in 2019, I posted exclusively on my phone for 7 years. Didn't set up a computer of my own when I was in a 2 year drunken milleiu, or when I moved back with my parents in 2014.

As someone who hasn't had proper internet in over a year, welcome to my hell PG Cooper. I feel like you. I finally got to set up a bookshelf for all my blu-rays and the Criterion Godzilla set rests proudly at the top, along with the similarly large Lawrence of Arabia, Dark Knight Trilogy, and Bergman box-sets.

A Night to RememberSince James Cameron's 1997 epic, A Night to Remember will likely be forever known as "the other Titanic movie". I mean, there are a lot of other Titanic movies but A Night to Remember seems to be the most major adaptation prior to Leo freezing to death in the ocean and the one a lot of scholars and historians point to as being superior. It's pretty darn good. The film is a late 50s British production that looks at the sinking of the Titanic through less of a singular perspective and is more of an ensemble document of the process by which the ship sank. The film certainly has characters and is ostensibly told from the perspective of Second Officer Charles Herbert Lightoller, but the focus is really more on the experience as a whole. Though lacking the production value of Cameron's film, director Roy Ward Baker does a remarkable job staging the action. The growing tension once the iceberg is hit and the slow revelation that so many are doomed is absorbing. It's exciting stuff. Though Baker doesn't indulge in traditional character development or narrative, I was also more emotionally touched by the ending than I expected to be. A Night to Remember is almost a prototype United 93, a dramatic retelling of a real-world disaster that becomes a somewhat warped thriller. A-Nice recommendation Doomsday. In for next round.

Glad you enjoyed it! I said it in another post but that scene where the husband hands off his sleeping son and whispers goodbye to him, oof that got me right in the dad gut.

The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)According to Letterboxd, I've only seen 4 Woody Allen movies. Well, now make that 5. The Purple Rose of Cairo stood out to me most of all because of its premise: a clumsy waitress (Mia Farrow) in an abusive marriage spends most of her time at the movies, seeing the same film over and over again until one of the characters in said film, a charming archeologist (Jeff Daniels), literally steps out of the screen to whisk the waitress away on the sort of romance one would normally see...well, in the movies. Fortunately, The Purple Rose of Cairo lives up to its high concept. To my knowledge, Woody Allen hasn't dealt with the fantastical in any way in any of his other movies, but he absolutely makes it work here. He wisely doesn't try to bring any sort of elaborate reason as to why this is happening here; it just does. He presents films in this as sort of higher-end stage plays, where the actors can break character and acknowledge people in the audience/real world, and that provides lots of fun exchanges and scenes between the actors in the film and the actors and people outside as they argue about the state of things. But the story also plays out in a highly entertaining fashion from there as well, including bringing in the actor who played the archeologist in the film in the first place. It's a clever way for Allen to make a statement about the magic of movies and the moviegoing experience, and how people can sometimes lose themselves in the world of films they watch. And especially right now, such an avenue feels particularly comforting and reassuring. But most importantly, Allen makes Cecilia, the main character, and her silver screen friend very charming and likable. Jeff Daniels especially -- whom I've always really liked -- is great here, embodying an innocence and just genuine quality that makes the character impossible not to like. Allen also does a strong job balancing the comedy with the seriousness of Cecilia's marriage problems. Overall, The Purple Rose of Cairo gave me a bit more than I was expecting and it's yet another Woody Allen movie that pretty much worked wonders for me.

If you see my Letterboxd ratings of late I've been plowing through some Woody Allen as well. I really enjoyed Purple Rose of Cairo, it's definitely one of his better flicks. If you haven't seen Hannah and Her Sisters you should definitely check it out soon, it's free on Amazon Prime.

Like Dooms, I have been going through Woody a ton recently, including some real pieces of shit, but I love Purple Rose. I'll second Hannah and her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors and Radio Days if you haven't seen them.
My review coming later tonight.

The others I've seen are Annie Hall, Cassandra's Dream, Blue Jasmine and Midnight in Paris. So, still a lot to go through.

Figures Doomsday would actively support Woody Allen now that he's cancelled.
