I just got finished reading a book called Best. Movie. Year. Ever: How 1999 Blew Up The Big Screen and as suggested by the title, it's all about how significant a year for movies 1999 was. And when you look at everything that came out that year, it's pretty staggering. The book doesn't cover every single release, but a good number of the big ones:
- The Blair Witch Project - Following - Run Lola Run - Go - Varsity Blues - Cruel Intentions - She's All That - 10 Things I Hate About You - American Pie - Office Space - The Matrix - The Phantom Menace - Galaxy Quest - The Iron Giant - Eyes Wide Shut - The Mummy - The Sixth Sense - The Best Man - The Wood - Election - Rushmore - The Virgin Suicides - American Beauty - Fight Club - Three Kings - The Limey - Being John Malkovich - The Insider - Boys Don't Cry - Magnolia
Just look at that list.
The end of the book poses the question, obviously, will we ever have another 1999-esque movie year? And I thought that'd make an interesting discussion topic.

Depends. A lot of studios feel like they're playing games anymore, a form of gambling, rather than trying ensure producing quality movies overall. Just finance a ton of movies and hope some stick. The result is very busy years with several movies coming out every week, but not many are very good.
