I just knew that was coming.
Are these supposed to be All-Time?

The article that these stats are taken from is basically making out the case that said stats aren't very reliable. Although the list at the bottom that tries to balance out the IMDB's Top 250 based on gender ratings is interesting to look at: fivethirtyeight.com/features/what-if-online-movie-ratings-werent-based-almost-entirely-on-what-men-think/It is curious how little women rate movies compared to men. Even if you're able to make the case that women have only been getting into movies more recently, the numbers still show that they tend to care a lot less to go to the bother of actually rating them. Is it just the way we use the internet perhaps? Maybe men are just more inclined to let the world know what they thought, or like keeping a list more than women do? Going by the numbers, many could conclude that women just don't like going to the movies as much (maybe they don't), but they definitely are. Even if you don't take something like Cinemscore's percentages into account, with the exception of some very particular movies, I rarely see a theater not packed almost seemingly down the middle between the sexes. But it makes you wonder just how much are women going to the movies because men are dragging them out to see them?

Do this exact same list for songs/albums and you'll ask why men don't listen to music.

Do this exact same list for songs/albums and you'll ask why men don't listen to music. Is that true? I really have no idea. Are women rating songs more than men, to such a drastic difference as these movie ratings? Either way, the original article was making the point that the stats just aren't very reliable because we're missing a big chunk of viewership of said movies. Which is true. It's not that a greater number of women haven't seen these movies. They just haven't been rating them. But is that really all it comes down to, and does it ultimately matter if they don't care? As said, women definitely are going to the movies. That really can't come into question. But do they like going to the movies as much? And of course, would women see movies as much if their guy friends weren't dragging them out there. Along a similar line, you could look at video sites like YouTube. There's always been a far greater amount of male YouTubers that do reviews. If music ratings can be compared, is it just that men care more about movies to go to the bother of rating them, and the same can be said of women with music? Obviously if women are more passionate about music than men, then that makes sense. If I could go by just the pool of my own home, it definitely feels like my wife and I are in this line of stereotyping thought. I believe my wife loves watching movies, but I'm actually not sure she would go out to see them nearly as often if I wasn't taking her with me. On the flip side of that coin, she does love listening to music. Way more than me. I love music and nearly all genres, but I don't turn on the tunes nearly as much as she does. If I'm working at home and I want some filler noise, I'll put on a movie or TV show in the background. Meanwhile, if she's working at home, she fires up Spotify on her phone to listen to. Furthermore, I definitely can say while I rate movies all the time, I pretty much never rate music.

It's still a curious set of movie lists, though. I mentioned noticing most of the time a near split when it comes to male and female patrons. However for the movies that did draw out mostly a female crowd (Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey), on IMDB the ratings on those movies are about the same between men and women. Yes, the women rated them higher, but not by a lot. They still kept coming out and making the movies a success, but they didn't rate them very well. If going by IMDB, anyway, there wasn't much of a disparity there. Then again men in general didn't rate those movies nearly as much as others.
If you go by titles where you started to get an increased male audience to very popular movies among women, you start seeing that greater number of votes shifting again. The Hunger Games movies brought women out in droves, but were still enjoyed a lot by men as well. The number difference on the Hunger Games series starts leaning more towards the usual when it comes to rating tendencies.
For comparison (score / votes): Twilight Males: 4.9 / 196,841 Females: 5.9 / 134,122
Hunger Games Males: 7.0 / 459,250 Females: 7.8 / 180,993

I refuse to believe there are people that rank The Great Escape that low.

So, women read more books and like empowering protagonists, while men like killing and might be from India. Sounds about right.

Don't underestimate the Indian market. I think they actually love movies more than we do.

Don't underestimate the Indian market. I think they actually love movies more than we do. Yeah, but presumably half of that market is also female.

So here's the male/female balanced list they made for the IMDB Top 250 (as of 2018).
