PG Cooper refused to do a video essay on Fighting With My Family so the universe said, “here’s the Peanut Butter Falcon.” Will he do a video essay now? The Magic 8 Ball says, “don’t count on it.” Zak is a young man with Down Syndrome who escapes a facility to go meet his favorite wrestler, played by Thomas Haden Church. Along the way he meets a troubled fisherman/drifter, played by Shia LaBeouf in a career comeback. Together they go on a journey of personal enrichment. Dakota Johnson co-stars as Zak’s caretaker and LaBeouf’s love interest. It’s a cute movie. The chemistry between the actors is great and the cinematography and soundtrack adds to that. But it’s nothing to get too excited about from a screenplay perspective. It kinda drags a bit and not much happens. It mostly works cause of the charm of the characters.

Career comeback? Have you seen the last, say, 10 movies Shia was in?
Let's not confuse his real life antics with his movie rap sheet. It's pretty solid.

Hands down one of my favorites so far this year. This is a movie where one could easily criticize it for a "basic" story structure, but to do so would be to miss the forest for the trees. Sometimes, people seem to forget the value of a well-told straightforward story. Especially when it's done with so much heart. The Peanut Butter Falcon is just such a film. It has one of the biggest hearts I've seen in years. It's impossible not to get charmed by Zak and become invested both in his journey to fulfill his dreams of becoming a wrestler and the friendship that blossoms between him and Tyler during their Mark Twain-inspired odyssey. Could this be Shia LaBeouf's most likable performance to date? I fully thin so. You look at him here and you just forget the fact that this is the kid who his start on Even Stevens. And Zack Gottasagen exudes a natural likability. It's a true delight to see these two interact with each other, and the film acts as a beautiful ode to friendship. By the end, you're unequivocally moved.
It's absolutely important to have movies like The Peanut Butter Falcon, to balance out against all the major studio-produced fare. And when they deliver as strongly as this one, it makes them all the more special.
