I was hoping it would be campy but it’s over-the-top in the way that a latter day Die Hard movie is over-the-top. Sure, Hobbs & Shaw display their usual banter, and there’s fun celebrity cameos, but you expect more from a Fast & Furious spin-off-slash-rival. Idris Elba (is that how you spell his name?) is a lame villain. You’d think a freakin’ cyborg wouldn’t get his ass kicked so often - or suck so much at his job. Dude’s been shit in every movie I’ve seen him in - and people want him to be James Bond? Get the heck outta here! Vanessa Kirby is fine. Overall, movie is okay. Vin Diesel can sleep at night. Action scenes are okay, I guess. Really not much to say. If you have to take your dad to the movies this summer, you should have taken him to Shaft, but too late for that now. Enjoy Hobbs & Shaw.

Do I need to see Fast and Furious 2-8 first? You need to watch the 2003 Italian Job.

Do you want to see an 80's action movie where a couple overly steroid men who don't like each other, have to put their differences aside to save the world, and get the damsel in distress?
Do you like super villains who give long threatening speeches to the heroes and have a crazy over the top plan to destroy the world?
Well I guess you should walk into your local cinema and watch Hobbs & Shaw. Cuz that's exactly the type of movie you are going to get.

It's a live-action cartoon, and I enjoyed it for that. It also uses Roman Reigns better than Vince McMahon ever has.
Having said that, I had the same problem with this that I did with the first Expendables - I come to these movies to see these guys be them. You don't need to try too hard and overcompensate.

That's actually pretty good, I haven't watched him in any Wresting stuff so I have no idea how charismatic or talented he is or not. LOL! Also can I say Ryan Reynolds cameo scenes are better than the entire movie. That alone was worth the price of the ticket.
I also loved Kevin Hart plane scene.

Man lotta issues with this. Not really worth explaining tho. Really dumb. No rules. Cool bad guy lair. Statham and rock are great when they insult each other. Just like the trailers tho the movie tries to reset the exposition when they get to Samoa. There's some talk about Statham and what's her faces upbringing (different accents for them but same parents... And those chins are a world apart) and then talk of rocks dad or some bullshit. We were done with talking. This was right around the 2 hour mark. Hurry it the fuck up. Cool final fight in the rain that looked cool though. I'll give em that.
The cameos were the best and if they are making sequels they need to think real hard about their world building involving a lot more regular roles for a few of them.
5/10 even for fast and furious this was a pretty poor effort.

Honestly, I don't know what I expected. I haven't liked any of the Fast & Furious movies to date, but I liked the Hobbs character at least. So maybe I was hoping a movie centered on him would finally be the one for me. Well, not with Chris Morgan still on scripting duties. The guy just can't write a good script, even when it's supposed to be for nothing more than a dumb fun action movie. If you want to pull off that kind of movie, then at the very least you should give your characters some charm and/or personality to carry you through the thin plot that's there just to string together the big set pieces. But this movie can't even do that, despite the fact that they've got Dwayne Johnson, who can only do so much with this awful writing. So, because we don't care one lick about any of the characters, the rest of the movie just feels hollow, monotonous and like a slog at times. With mostly stupid humor and one-liners thrown in on top. Look, I knew not to expect anything deep in any sense of the word from Hobbs & Shaw. But I was at least expecting something fun, and the movie couldn't even deliver on that.

You know, if somebody had told me in 2001 after I had watched Vin Diesel's somehow even crappier Point Break rip off that one day I'd be watching the latest sequel where the Rock and Jason Statham fight a cyborg man, I'm not sure I would have believed you.

I'm sure of that, though a movie about a bald, babyoiled up street racer who steals DVD players is an odd movie to make that sequel from.

No, but it wasn't even f&f standard. Well, the F&F standard is pretty shitty to begin with, so I'd say this one was on-brand.
