The damn Cats trailer is playing before the movie.
Anyway... it’s alright. Very well-made. But it lacks energy and personality. It’s just National Geographic but with Lion King.
Jungle Book is better. No surprise.

Boring first half, and 'meh' second half. Timon and Pumba are easily the best part of this movie.
The photo realistic technology is pretty neat, check it out in Dolby or IMAX to get the best picture.
But the problem lies in the facial expressions and the animals can't show any emotions. So your left with dead pan stares with no emotional impact in critical scenes.
This is hugely disappointing, totally a nostalgia cash grab for Disney.
Stick to the much superior animated film, probably will never watch this movie again.

I've either enjoyed and/or tolerated the live action Disney remakes up to this point (Maleficent and Alice excluded, cause they're not technically remakes). Hell, I ended up enjoying Aladdin when I thought I wouldn't. But Jon Favreau's Lion King remake is the one that finally makes me say "no."
Of all the ones so far, it's the most pointless. And hollow. This is just a re-animated version of the original. Sure, it looks great and all, but by making it all look more realistic, all of the personality is drained from both the characters and the story. The problem that comes with having the characters look like their real counterparts is that actual animals don't have emotive faces. We just get the same blank-eyed stares from everyone throughout the whole movie. It's hard to feel moved by any of the significant moments in the film when Simba or Mufasa or Scar have the same look in their eyes at any given time. You'd think the voice actors would at least try to compensate by giving their all, but unfortunately, it seems like Favereau just went with everybody's first line readings -- especially Donald Glover. I'll admit that Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen liven things up a little, but everybody else...woof. Even James Earl Jones sounds disinterested.
Any emotional response the film DOES elicit is more the result of the wired-in feelings you automatically get from the animated movie rather than the effectiveness of this version. The Circle of Life opening works, but after that, it all just feels half-hearted. And don't get me started on the way they butchered Be Prepared. Oh, and another downside of the realistic look? All the color and vibrancy of the original is replaced by a bland, colorless and dreary look.
And that speaks to the very heart of this remake. Bland, colorless and lacking of most of the things that make the original so special.

James Earl Jones is way too old for this shit.
It was evident in Rogue One.
Considering this is a remake, I dont know why they didn't just use the original recordings.

Finally watched this on Disney+. I don’t know why it got so much crap critically, the Mrs. and I both enjoyed it. Yeah it’s the Lion King all over again, no shit. No it didn’t add anything whatsoever and it tried way too hard to be funny with jokes that were DOA but overall it’s a solid way to kill a couple hours. It did exactly what these Disney remakes are meant to do, remake a movie exactly how you remember it solely for the purpose of taking more of your money. Why would anyone expect something different?

I did, I was expecting to hate it but I thought it was fine too. Although I have no idea how they didn’t have Jafar turn into a cobra, that was one of the best parts of the animated version. We can all agree though that the upcoming Bambi is what we’re really waiting on.

Also just watched it on Disney+ and I'm actually pretty bummed we didn't see it in the theater. Unfortunately the wife and I felt like we had been burned one too many times after being disappointed with Beauty & Beast, Dumbo, and Aladdin, that when Lion King got mix reviews, we decided to skip it.
The movie is gorgeous, though, and since it's nearly a shot for shot remake, we naturally liked it because we also like the original. And that's apparently one of the primary reasons that critics rated it down so much. A "why bother remaking it if it's going to be the same" train of thought. But enough to give it a negative review? Some people complained about the lack of emoting from the animals, having tried to make it too realistic, I guess. I suppose I noticed it as well, but I didn't think it was as bad as it was made out to be. I don't know. Maybe we just went in with low expectations.
The only real gripe I had with it was the loss of some silly and magical elements. I wanted my silly dancing monkey, dammit! Oh, and I would have liked to have seen some other returning cast members as well, such as Jeremy Irons, Rowan Atkinson, and/or Whoopi Goldberg.
But yeah, I was definitely thinking throughout the movie how disappointed I was that we didn't go see it in IMAX.

Oh, and I found it a total missed opportunity that they didn't release the intro of the movie as the first teaser, just as they did with the original cartoon. Especially considering it is a direct shot for shot remake.
