I grew up with the Chucky movies but I’ll be the first to admit they’re trash. Just kick the damn doll. When the remake was announced with its Alexa Gone Wild premise, everyone mocked it, but its actually turned out to be a good movie.
We meet Andy from Toy Story and his hot mom Aubrey Plaza. He’s the loser kid in the neighborhood. His mom is the loser millennial working at Walmart. There’s an annoying cat, an evil step-dad and Jack Black as the creepy building maintenance man. Chucky becomes over-protective of Andy and kills anyone that hurts him or gets in-between their friendship.
The remake works because Andy is a sympathetic character and Chucky controlling technology makes the kills more believable. It’s not so easy to kick him now. I also enjoyed how their turbulent relationship was depicted and handled. My only complaint is that Andy should have turned him off the moment he did something bad. This isn’t the original Chucky whose an evil spirit in a doll. You can turn off this Chucky. Although they sorta addressed that with some subtle psychological analysis of Andy but at least have the mom turn him off. It’s a nitpick but it’s worth exploring, especially since they set-up a sequel based on a premise that could have been tackled in this movie.
