... wow ... When's the last time we got an old-fashioned horror film, one that relies on mood and atmosphere and music? I don't mean those boring ass A24 horror movies that Dracula and PG Cooper masturbate to. I mean something traditional that harkens back to the 1960's and 70's. Been a while, right? This movie is an adaptation of a Stephen King story, one that was already adapted in the 80's, so there's no surprises for anyone familiar with it. The beats are the same. Family cat dies. They bury it and it comes back to life - but isn't quite the same. Then a child dies, they bury it and it also doesn't return the same. It don't matter. What's key here is execution. The filmmakers do a wonderful job of immersing the viewers in the creepiness of the story. It's an experience more than something that's intellectually satisfying. There were teenagers in the audience, which you'd expect to make a ruckus, but they were transported to the nightmarish world of this movie. That's how you know it's good. It got teenagers to shut the fuck up, to stop making out, to put their phones and to actually watch the movie. Bravo.

Apples and oranges in terms of comparing it to Shazam!, but it's my preferred of the two movies I saw in theaters this weekend. Does nothing particularly new for the horror genre, but it DOES execute quite effectively. The real stars here are directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer and screenwriter Jeff Buhler. They do a realy good job of condensing the Stephen King book to a lean, mean 100-minute thrill ride that balances the atmosphere/tension/scares with building up these characters just enough. As a result, the moments that need to hit hard do without it ever feeling rushed. It's also a more conventional horror movie than ones like Us, Hereditary, Get Out, etc. but that's okay because these filmmakers know how to do it. Sometimes, remade is better...to twist a certain quote from the book/movie.

Yea I liked it through 3/4 of the movie but the last part kinda lagged. I liked the movie well enough but it just faded in the end, the changes made didn't bother me at all. Just felt it was kind of rushed.

I was above average on it until the end solely on the major twist, but the last act just isn't good.
