Foster child Billy Baston meets a wizard, becomes a superhero and fights Mark Strong. Oh, and Dwayne Johnson has an executive producer credit.
Let’s cut to the chase. Movie is pretty good. It has a relatable story, humor and a worthy villain.
Now for the bad. It drags a bit cause Shazam... really... never becomes a superhero. He’s a 14 year old kid that gets superpowers, learns to use them, abuses them and then when Mark Strong shows up he realizes he should be doing some superhero stuff. Kinda lame. People talk shit about 2002 Spider-Man but at least that whole wrestling scene didn’t take up too much screen time. Imagine if 2002 Spider-Man was 75% wrestling scene. That’s kinda what Shazam feels like. Also... Zachary Levi and the kid playing Billy clearly didn’t coordinate. They’re totally playing two different characters. I would call that an oversight but it’s also clear and the studio had certain agendas and let it slide.
But, whatever, overall it’s a fun movie and you can shrug away the flaws. It’s not the type of movie that’ll have you bitching about stuff like in the Chris Nolan Batman trilogy. It’s more in line with Deadpool where you’ll forgive its sins.

It's really good and a lot of fun. So much great stuff that they actually left out of the trailers. Definitely a ton of respect for the marketing team.
Go see it. 8.5 / 10

Shazam! - ReviewIt's not perfect, but the good outweighs the bad more often than not. With a fun story, boundless energy, and an irresistible sense of wonder this is easily one of the best-installment of the DCEU so far. (Not counting out Wonder Woman) Direction: I feel like David Samberg is the DCEU's take on Thor Ragnarok or Guardians of the Galaxy (other world type story). He's not really known for much past some horror, which made him an initially odd choice for this movie; a choice that paid off extremely well. He helps shine some light into this world, but doesn't underplay the action. His direction and coordination through framing helps us laugh and, in some cases, feel the punches. The action isn't shaky, like the other DCEU installments and due to the bright vibrant colors, we really know what's happening, where it's happening, and who it's happening to. Well done. The writing can be uneven at times, but definitely fun. It's a story that converts Billy Batson's origin into a modern-day retelling with some elements of Big in there. The humor is timed well and consistently funny; a lot of the jokes and humor from side charactershelp the story obtain its brighter feel. The relationships are extremely well written and heartfelt. Performances: I swear, Zachary Levi was born to play Shazam! He carried childlike enthusiasm effortlessly. Mark Strong played a menacing villain. The child actors, especially Jack Dylan Fraiser was my favorite of the bunch and seeing his super hero version was wonderful with perfect cast of Adam Brody (The OC) Basically go see this movie. This is easily the best incarnation of any superhero in the DCEU IF they decide to play it right Shazam, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman team-up movie could be really cool. 9/10

This was pretty much stolen from Kung Fu Panda 2. Still funny though.

I enjoyed Shazam!, which is an accomplishment for a WB/DC movie. Right from the opening scene we get longtime DC alum John Glover, which is often ( Batman: TAS and Smallville), but certainly not always ( Batman & Robin) a good sign. Once we get to the wizard's lair, one of the first things we see is Mr. Mind trapped in a glass terrarium. A subtle nod to old school fans without being too weird just yet for non-nerds. For most of the film, the tone shifts wildly between incredibly dark and light comedy. For a movie advertised as being family friendly, Shazam! is surprisingly violent and too intense for small children. Right after Dr. Sivana gets his powers, there's a shockingly violent confrontation with his estranged family. There's also a bit towards the end involving Billy's foster brothers and sisters when the younger two really should have just been screaming at the top of her lungs non-stop, or curled up in a fetal position. The number of incredibly idiotic things Billy does to test out what superpowers he has boggles the mind. Take the PG-13 rating seriously. For the average adult moviegoer, it's a fun time. This take on the superhero origin story is more lighthearted than most, since he's got huge amounts of power, with his only guidance coming from a kid who's into superheroes. The sub-plot involving Billy's search for his mother is never properly explored, although I'm sure there's a bunch of it that was left on the editing room floor. No time for character development. We need another action scene! Finally, the producers clearly were very impressed by the closing credits of Spider-Man: Homecoming. They were so impressed that they ripped them off almost entirely. We get a song by The Ramones and hand drawn animated sequences on college rule paper done in the style of a series of schoolboy drawings. 7/10 The post credits scene with Mr. Mind truly surprised me, despite his appearance at the beginning of the film, and the shot later with Billy of his terrarium being broken. I figured they would want to have something with The Rock as Black Adam. I guess that ship has sailed for the foreseeable future.

It's good, not great. But also, I'm gonna use the F-word: it's fun. Lives up to the "Big as a superhero movie" promise (and even contains a nice, quick nod to that movie about halfway through). It has a big heart, which goes a long way, and some really good humor. Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer and co. all do solid work that fits the material. Mark Strong is fine, too, even if his character is underwritten. It's not in the upper echelon of superhero movies, but it still has a very firm grasp on what it needs to be and succeeds at doing so.
Also, bonus points given for a great use of my favorite Queen song, "Don't Stop Me Now" for a particular montage.

Probably the best entry for DC for sure. Just had nothing exactly that would piss you off like aquaman's clunky dialogue or insistence on all CGI all the time. Not to say it wasn't good, it was perfectly charming. Kids weren't over used to the point of tedium. Action was effective and not over used, some solid creature design. Good bad guy.
Bring on black Adam though. Really the main reason Shazam is even still relevant.
