Captain Marvel - Review ThreadI can't believe this is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jeez does time fly since the first "Iron Man" movie. Anyway just got out I'll just do bullet points of what I thought. - It takes the action type films of the much popular 80s/90s movies, adds heroines instead of overly muscular men, with a dash of 90's music and this in a nutshell is "Captain Marvel" - This movie is fun. Think more Guardians of the Galaxy origins rather than Captain America or Iron Man. Has its own weird twist on the Super Hero genre, and at the end you want see Captain Marvel will interact with the Avenger's come April. - The 90's nostalgia worked for me, it has the perfect mix of pre Avengers film we need to setup Nick Fury and the Agents of SHIELD. - I haven't even even talked about the awesome scifi source material. Think more Galaxy Quest rather than Star Trek. Which is I guess how they are setting up these cosmic scifi movies in MCU. Guardians and Thor Raganork work in this weird scifi blender. So why the hell not do that with Captain Marvel continue this weird scifi adventure feel in 90's setting. -Brie Larson is great in the role, I was afraid she was going to be stale, from all the previews I've seen but thankfully she makes it her own. - Without giving any spoilers. I LOVE Ben Mendelsohn as the villian. HE STEALS EVERY SCENE!!!! - Brie’s buddy cop chemistry with Samuel L Jackson is so much fun and her relationship with Lashana Lynch is the real heart of it. - I forgot the cat's name already, but I dug it. I can say more, but I'll leave at this 8/10

I'm seeing it Sunday. I don't know why I came here as it might have a spoiler though I glad it didn't. I'm wanting to see how she and Fury work together.

To all the angry Trump supporters, who believe this movie is only for feminist females and pretending to be mad because she said “she hates white men” and because everyone else told them to, here's what Brie Larson actually said: www.vanityfair.com/.../brie-larson-diversity-film... And her comments are based on an actual study of film critic diversity found here: t.co/WyvVNR0XkUGo check this movie out this weekend, ignore the trolls!

Are there that many people angry about this movie though? I haven't heard of a whole lot of people causing a stink about it, not nearly as many as there were with Ghostbusters.

Just go to any Facebook page talking about Captain Marvel Or any movie page with comments and you’ll see tons of Trump trolls Saying Bree Larson hates white man and only wants nonwhite people to see this movie and it’s just being tossed around like it’s factual by Trump supporters

It's not Ghostbusters bad, but there is a contingency of angry misogynists who've decided they hate Brie Larson. I suspect social media makes the group look a lot bigger than it really is but it does exist.

Cards on the table, Captain Marvel is lower tier Marvel. The structure of the plot gets murky and busy as it tries really hard to juggle it's plot and Carol's origin and integrate the two together. While I enjoyed the story itself Carol feels like a bland character that relies on it too much to make herself interesting, when she should have been interesting from the get go.
But during it's highs it feels like Marvel schooling DC on how to make a Green Lantern movie that doesn't suck. I had no huge problems with Larson, despite a forced dry wit that didn't seem to suit her, and she had great chemistry with Jackson. It's basically a fun road trip movie that'a sold on their interplay.
Without spoiling anything, the opening of the movie got massive applause and left the audience stunned. It's wonderful. The movie that follows is mostly alright.

Quick take: It's... alright. Marvel has been on a big winning streak lately and they were eventually going to have to make something that was a bit shakier. This isn't a disaster but it's probably their worst movie since Ant-Man 1 or maybe Age of Ultron, but even a lesser Marvel movie is probably above average. The first 20-30 minutes are rushed and kind of confusing, the movie takes a long time to find its footing but it eventually does. The 90s stuff was pretty fun and for the most part they stop short of making it obnoxious. I was also surprised that they didn't lean more into the whole feminism angle, I almost kind of wish there had been more of it or less of it. It never really feels like a major theme, so when certain choices seem to lean more towards it (like a certain song choice) they almost seem to be coming out of nowhere. Samuel L. Jackson is pretty good here. It's not an awards-caliber performance or anything, but he moves out of his usual schtick and in doing so is something of a breath of fresh air. The de-aging tech is also shockingly good for how much screentime he has. The Action scenes are... they aren't bad but they also aren't particularly impressive. Danvers' powers are kind of boring and there's nothing overly memorable about the set-pieces. Also I'll give it this: it's not formulaic. At times I kind of wish it had been, but ultimately it's probably for the best. Questions:
Was there a reason why the alien cat was just hanging around the government base to begin with?
I'm still not exactly sure why Danvers has been MIA for the last twenty years. Like, wouldn't it have been a little more useful to page her before Thanos destroyed half of the universe instead of after?
Wouldn't the Chitauri invading New York to steal the very macguffin she fought to recover here have been a good time to give her a page?
I still don't really get this Kree species. Why are some of them blue and some of them not? How do those computer chip things on their necks work? Why did Danvers not notice that she was bleeding red blood? *** out of Five

I enjoyed Captain Marvel quite a bit. It's a solid first film for the character. The movie isn't perfect, but none of the initial solo films of the MCU are. I especially appreciated that her antagonists weren't just evil versions of herself. Not only does Vers/Carol Danvers have a proper character arc, but her powers grow with her character. I look forward to seeing just how far her powers have developed over the decades between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame.
Lots of great action, with some fun twists and turns for the characters and plot. Some of the de-aging FX were not done as well as they should have been. Fury looked right most of the time, but Coulson always takes a slight dip into the uncanny valley.
7/10

The solo films for Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man 1, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange are amazing films. This is just another Thor 1 and Captain America 1 solo outing nothing special but sets the character up for future installments

Definitely one of the weaker Marvel movies. In fact I can’t remember the last one I watched where I came away so underwhelmed. And Brie Larson sucked in this.

Her character is definitely an odd one out in the MCU. I'm curious to see if it was just a case of poor direction and if under the Russo brothers she'll be better.

I liked this a lot. Solid 8/10 film. That damn cat stole every scene, and I loved seeing the Skrulls on the big screen, finally.
This reminded me a bit of Guardians 1, and I liked Captain Marvel more than Guardians 2.

It's a solid first film for the character. The movie isn't perfect, but none of the initial solo films of the MCU are. The solo films for Guardians of the Galaxy, Iron Man 1, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange are amazing films. This is just another Thor 1 and Captain America 1 solo outing nothing special but sets the character up for future installments Guardians of the Galaxy had a bland and underdeveloped villain. Iron Man I, Black Panther and Doctor Strange all had villains who were evil versions of themselves. Black Panther's Killmonger did have the benefit of being a strong and well developed character, but then they just put him in a nearly identical costume with identical abilities for the big finale. As much as I enjoy the first Iron Man, the reality is that the plot doesn't make much sense. Obediah pays the Ten Rings to kill Tony Stark because he wants to run Stark Industries himself. As motivations go, that's weak AF. To make matters worse, it becomes very clear through the course of the movie that Obediah IS in fact running Stark Industries, and has been ever since Howard Stark died. Tony doesn't have any interest in actually being in charge of Stark Industries. All he wants to do is create things and be a playboy. This being the case, Obediah can do whatever he wants (like illegally dealing weapons to the other side) and Tony won't even notice. Obediah even acknowledges to Tony that he can't do for Stark Industries what Tony can. The explanation we're given is that Obie has "gone crazy", despite the fact that he's able to efficiently run the most successful weapons company on the planet without any difficulty, and has done so for decades.

The thing with Marvel movies at this point is that they've got it down to the point where they aren't going to make a bad film. Now, you can rant and rave about "formula" and how much you don't like it, but the movies are enjoyable. However, the flip side of that is that this framework also prevents them from making a GREAT film as well. And Captain Marvel seems to fall right down the middle of this narrow spectrum as really quite ordinary.
The plot sees an alien warrior who can't remember her past hunting down Skrulls and eventually learn that she's from Earth when one of her missions forces her to go there. She meets up with Sam Jackson and a cat. She eventually learns not everything is as it seems. And she shoots a lot of stuff with power emanating from her fists.
So in other words, it fits the bill for a Marvel movie well enough. Brie Larson is ok in the role, and I liked having her team with Nick Fury through most of the movie. There was some clunky dialogue and blatant exposition, especially earlier in the film, and quite a few humour beats that fell flat. Its not quite at Guardians level here.
There were some parts in this movie that I felt I was watching Star Trek. Also, in the scene where she is explaining everything to her friend and her daughter in the kitchen, did anyone else picture Arnold cutting the skin off of his arm?
I think Captain Marvel will make a good addition to the Marvel Universe, though it is worth noting that her powers seem to be really powerful, which may cause problems. Here it wasn't so bad ass she doesn't really use them in full till near the end, but having such undefined powers usually doesn't work so well cinematically. I hope they find a way to reign her in a bit.
Captain Marvel is right in the middle of the Marvel films, a group which already has a pretty low standard deviation. You'll likely have a good time, but don't expect to be blown away. 7/10

It's good to see that Trank can joke about it now. As for the original tweet, wow. Some of the biggest box office disasters of the past few years have been superhero movies.

I liked it okay. Takes some time to get going and the action scenes are kind of bleh, but I like the characters and by the end I was pretty into it. One of the weaker films from the MCU of late, but ultimately an effective blockbuster. Marvel continues to make reliable entertainments. I liked Goose.
