 It took cojones to make a science-fiction sequel to a horror movie, although both are technically comedies so maybe it’s not too impressive. The beginning of the movie is fucking amazing. It’s revealed the time loop wasn’t a cosmic event but the results of a science experiment. The goofy Asian guy, roommate to the main characters love interest, is apparently a genius and he built a machine that can control the space time continuum. The story begins with him now stuck in the time loop and being chased by a killer as well. The heroine from the original helps him out and the killer turns out to be the Asian guy from another dimension. He warns of the dangers of the machine, and in the ensuing battle, the machine is activated and the heroine from the original is sent back to the first movie and back to the time loop. This first section of the sequel is insanely hilarious, and sadly, the rest of the movie never lives up to it. We spend the remainder of the running time rehashing the first movie but with some twists and turns. It isn’t terrible and the actress, once again, gives a tour de force performance but it’s a shame the sequel ran out of creative juices so quickly. Nonetheless, it’s still an enjoyable movie and I look forward to more. This has the potential to be a very good and noteworthy series. |

I just watched both the first and 2U. The first is nothing special, but it was fun to watch. Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow have a leg up on it though. I thought 2U would be the same except...more. To an extent it is, but they threw bigger and crazier plot points into it that made it not wear out its welcome. It pretty much went down the Crank 2 route of sequel making. The only real issue I had with the second was that the killer at the end is obvious (there's one at the beginning that is like "WTF is going on?"). The mystery in the original worked somewhat because there were multiple red herrings and the killer had some decent misdirection away from her. In 2U they shy away from the mystery mostly and don't dwell on it. When they finally reveal who it is it's the person I suspected halfway through because they're the only one with an established motive in the movie. |

You know...I think I liked this better than the first. Why? Because not only does this movie embrace the zaniness of its premise even more so than its predecessor, but it also does a surprisingly good job of developing Tree a little more, which gives Jessica Rothe a lot to work with here. It also does an effective bit of genre-hopping. This one is more of a sci-fi comedy with the horror/thriller elements added in almost after the fact, but that approach works. Characters reference Back To The Future Part II a lot throughout this movie, and this film fortunately has more in common with that movie than The Hangover Part II. But back to the tone, it's all once again held together by Jessica Rothe, who takes such a silly premise and acts the shit out of it. There's even kind of a heart-tugging moment that I certainly wasn't expecting. And yes, while by design this movie has to rehash the first to an extent, it at least does it in creative and funny ways, and the jokes all land. Plus, you actually do get involved in the story. It's not anything spectacular, but it is very enjoyable, and I do hope they get to make a third (come on, they're cheap enough to make). And given that I thought initially that there wasn't any room for a sequel, the fact that Happy Death Day 2U makes me want to see a full trilogy is, in itself, an accomplishment.
