Losing weight isn't a good enough reason for Bale either. Jobs would need to have become a quadruple amputee for Bale to be interested. Nothing says commitment to becoming your character like cutting off your own limbs.

The much-ballyhooed movie about the late Apple founder Steve Jobs has been "put into turnaround" by Sony Pictures, The Hollywood Reporter reports. That means Sony will not make the film, and the project will now be shopped to other studios. Universal is said to be interested, with an eye on next year's awards season. The proposed film was being produced by Scott Rudin and others, and was to be directed by Danny Boyle from a script by Aaron Sorkin. The project has struggled to cast a lead, moving from Leonardo DiCaprio to Christian Bale and most recently, Michael Fassbender. A source says Boyle needed the film to go into production in January, because he had a small window before starting another project, while Sony has several movies already in production for 2015 and wanted the film to shoot later.

No longer would the Social Network reunion between Sorkin and Fincher happen, nor would Jobs-deadringer Christian Bale take on that role. How could a movie with so much going for it be derailed so, so far? Reading through the leaked emails to and from Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal, it becomes clear—Apple HQ, this place ain't.

Emails between Pascal and widely hated Jobs producer Scott Rudin show gallons of bad blood, starting this past February. The dust-up seems to have been over Angelina Jolie, who objected to David Fincher directing Jobs instead of her version of Cleopatra.

Universal Pictures today announced that principal photography has commenced in San Francisco on the now-officially-titled Steve Jobs. Set backstage at three iconic product launches and ending in 1998 with the unveiling of the iMac, the film aims to take audiences behind the scenes of the digital revolution to paint an intimate portrait of the brilliant man at its epicenter.

Steve Jobs is directed by Academy Award winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) and written by Academy Award winner Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, “The Newsroom”), working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography of the Apple founder.

Michael Fassbender (X-Men: Days of Future Past, 12 Years a Slave) will play Jobs, the pioneering founder of Apple, with the Academy Award-winning Kate Winslet (The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind) starring as Joanna Hoffman, former marketing chief of Macintosh. Steve Wozniak, who co-founded Apple, is played by Seth Rogen (Neighbors, The Interview), and Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom,” Good Night and Good Luck) stars as former Apple CEO John Sculley. The film also stars Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice, Being Flynn) as Chrisann Brennan, Jobs’ ex-girlfriend, and Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, “Boardwalk Empire”) as Andy Hertzfeld, one of the original members of the Apple Macintosh development team.

Other members of the cast include Perla Haney-Jardine (Future Weather), Ripley Sobo (Winter’s Tale) and Makenzie Moss (Do You Believe?) as young Lisa Brennan at various stages of her life, Sarah Snook (Predestination) as Andrea Cunningham, as well as Adam Shapiro (A Single Man) as Avie Tevanian.

Producers on Steve Jobs are Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, Source Code), Guymon Casady (“Game of Thrones,” “Hope Springs”) of Film 360, Scott Rudin and Academy Award winner Christian Colson (Slumdog Millionaire, Selma).

I enjoyed him as Magneto but that is about it. The rest of the casting is pretty good though, including the always entertaining Stuhlbarg.
