Finally. The Transformers movie we’ve been waiting for... says the usual hyperbole. It’s..... okay. It’s textbook Spielbergian, which is fine, but it also feels dated and highly unlikely what fans really wanted. Unless you guys REALLY wanted an 80’s Spielberg movie as your Transformers movie, even though that’s not what the TV series was at all. Story is set 20 years before the 2007 original, with Bumblebee fleeing from Cybertron to start an Autobot base on Earth. He’s followed by two Decepticons who trick John Cena and the U.S. military into thinking that Bumblebee is the bad guy. That forces Bumblebee into hiding, where he meets and befriends Hailee Steinfeld. She’s grieving the recent death of her father, and through her relationship with Bumblebee, learns to live again. The emotions are in the right place and that’s what ultimately helps the movie get a passing grade. There’s a reason those old Spielberg movies are popular. The formula works. You just need to combine it with a good script. Otherwise, this might as well been Short Circuit 3. But, hey, at least it’s better than those Michael Bay sequels. Am I right?

that’s not what the TV series was at all. If they adapted the TV series faithfully, there'd the a lot of stilted monologues at one another, even more useless human characters, and a shit ton of car chases where they all move five miles per hour. And the action? Let's just say the blaster aim would make Storm Troopers look like sharpshooters.

Itçs pretty much what I assumed it was based on the trailers. They took the first 40 minutes of the first Transformers movie, readapted it into an unnecessary prequel, and topped the very low bar Michael Bay left behind.
Congratulations?
If I were taking Transformers as a narrative, which I probably shouldn't, this movie is redundant bullshit. It does a lot of things right that the last five got wrong, which makes it very unfortunate that all of this is wasted on an empty one-off instead of an actual Transformers movie. I guess based on the pure filmmaking competence on display I can say maybe I'd rewatch this movie before the others, though the staleness of the story will wear me down if I do so.
It's cute, but I'm not won over by it. If Travis Knight rebooted entirely with this much better vision then we'd be talkin'.

Easily the best Transformers movie to date. Though given what the first five looked like as a whole, it wasn't a tough title to take. But, seriously, Travis Knight made crafting a legitimately good Transformers movie look so easy. All it takes is crafting a story that actually has heart to it; who'da thunk?!? I never thought I'd use the word 'sweet' to describe a Transformers movie, but that's exactly what Bumblebee is, and a big part of why it works so well: it's sweet. Hailee Steinfeld sells the shit of of this girl-and-her-dog dynamic that the movie is built around, and there's tons of genuinely good (and not annoying) touches of humor and heart that come out of it. Bumblebee clearly takes the majority of its influence from E.T. and rolls with it, and the movie's all the better for it. I actually left the theater with a warm smile on my face, and having a Transformers movie do that to me is something so pleasantly surprising.

Yeah not bad. Nothing special killer soundtrack some nice robot fights. Cena was awful for a while but finished stronger at least.
